I am having problem connecting to internet with Netgear WGT624 wireless router. I read the router manual and different forums on web site and done every possible effort to configure the router but internet does not work through it.
I am using NTL through Virgin Media cable broadband and router is dsl. First I configure it on 192.168.1.1 web site and given "automatically detects my IP, DNS and DHCP. it did but didnt work. Then I called my ISP and aksed them for primary and secondary DNS that they gave. Then I manually put the primary and sec DNS but it again didnt worked the internet. I read through the manual and unchecked the security box. Then I spoof the router MAC address with my ethernet MAC address. but no response. When I configure the router with these settings, it detects Dynamic IP(DHCP) and even my IP address, Subnet, Gateway, Primary DNS and Secodary DNS in internet port and LAN port and everything seems to be nicely configured but when I open the browser, it does not go to any web site. I have firewall on my pc that I closed during the configuration. I also did configure my browser to "Automatically detects LAN settings". I also reboot my router according to the procedure on WGT624 web site and disconnects lot of times my DSL modem and router from power but situation is as it is. I spoken to my ISP in this regard but they said that they can only provide DNS and can do nothing in this regard. Router is perfectly fine and shows all the required lights green. If someone could help me out in sorting this problem, I will be thankful to him. Regards. |

I thought netgears default address was 192.168.0.1 did you change it to 192.168.1.1?
What is it connect to, and what is the private ip address of the modem it is connected to. |

Well I connected to 192.168.1.1 because I couldnt access to 192.168.0.1. Actually what happened whenever I tried to go to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 the browser automatically took me on the configuration page of Netgear i.e www.routerlogin.com.
And what do you mean by private IP address, could you please clarify and how to check it. Thanks |

What was you IP address and gateway when connected to the modem. You may have a routing/address conflict if it is on the same subnet as the new netgear.
In windows open an msdos terminal and type "ipconfig/all" Can you also verify that you are connection the netgear WAN port to your current router or modem. |

I don't think the WGT624 is a cable router, I think it's meant for ADSL.

I don't think the WGT624 is a cable router, I think it's meant for ADSL. Even if it is an adsl router, we can still tell him how to bridge it to his current router/modem. |

Thanks Austin_KW for taking interest in my problem.
After typing command ipconfig/all, I got the following data: Window IP Configuration Host Name............... Home-0ec218d38f Primary DNS suffix...... Node Type................Unknown IP Routing Enabled.......No WINS Proxy Enabled.......No DNS Suffix Search List....NTL Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection: Connection specific DNS Suffix....NTL Description...............Realtek RTL8138 Physical Address..........00-02-44-8f-18-71 DHCP Enabled..............Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled..Yes IP Address..................192.168.1.2 Subnet Mask...............255.255.255.0 Default Gateway..........192.168.1.1 DHCP Server...............192.168.1.1 DNS Servers...............62.253.162.237 194.168.4.237 An RJ45 cable is coming out from my modem and oh yes I am connecting the modem cable to my Netgear WAN port. This data is taken by coammnd ipconfig/all while connection through router. I hope you would have any possible solution for it. Regards. |

Post the same command when connected directly to the modem.

Right, these data has been taken by directly connecting through modem.
Window IP Configuration Host Name............... Home-0ec218d38f Primary DNS suffix...... Everything looks good.
I cannot verify the dns servers because I am outside the virgin network and they refuse to serve me, but there appears to be servers there. You now need to systematically isolate the problem. Reconnect the router. Use the web interface at http://192.168.1.1 to verify that the router get an IP address by dhcp, It may be different than the address you see on your PC now. You may also want to let the router set its dns servers automatically. Open a terminal and use the ping command to verify the levels connectivity ping the router private address "ping 192.168.1.1". This cannot fail. then ping the router at its public address, this is the address that the router got over dhcp from NTL eg "ping 80.5.57.27". But this address may be different now so use the address you see when you connect to the router at http://192.168.1.1 Then ping google.com's ip address "ping 72.14.207.99" Then ping google.com by name "ping google.com" Where these pings fail will help isolate where the problem is. |

sorry Austin for late reply. I have checked according to your instructions.
I ping the 192.168.1.1 and I get the reply from that. Then I checked the my IP address on 192.168.1.1 it was 80.5.57.27 but when I ping this, it says "Request Time Out" The I ping google.com Ip address i.e 72.14.207.99 and I get the reply from it. but when I ping www.google.com, it says "Ping request could not find host www.google.com. Please check the name and try again". Same messege came on pinging www.yahoo.com It looks that if ping by IP address, it gets the reply but when ping by site name it doesnt work. Is it seems to be DNS problem. Please advise what to do next. |

Hi Austin
The router is working perfect now. What happened is that a friend of my friend is IT prof and works on routers. I spoken to him and he says that I have to detect my DNS servers sutomatically while at the same time spoofing the router MAC address to the PC MAC address and it should work and it worked. but there was problem that when connecting wirelessly it repeatedly droping the connection, so I had to download the updated firmware of router and problem is solved. Now it is working perfect with maximum speed. Thankyou anyway and i appreciate your efforts in this regard. |
