Default I am very Confused

I am moving house and am finding it really difficult to transfer my internet and phone accross.

I have broadband and line rental and phoned up to switch to my new house thinking it would be easy

Asking me for the phone number of my new house, I told them i have a dial tone on the phone but obviously it wont ring out so i cant tell them.

They explained their procedure.

I need to phone BT and get the phone number of the house
I need to phone the cancellation team and cancel the service
I need to phone them back and transfer the service i just cancelled??

I phoned BT, and explained tiscali told me to call them for the phone number of the house, they sounded like they had no idea what i was on about and told me i need to sign up with them as a new customer and get a line.

So i phoned tiscali back and explained to them BT will not give me the phone number, but having gone through this bit of a confusing process moving into my last house. Explained that i had a dial tone when i moved in there, and no number but they signed me up with no problem because there was a dial tone.

They then told me it depends as some exchanges are owned by tiscali and some shared, so they cannot do anything without me having a BT line?

I asked them if they want my new address then to check if am near one of their exchanges, but they didn't as there is nothing they can do to check?

Why could they do it without a number when i first joined?
and why does it seem so difficult for me to move everything accross, am i going about any of this the wrong way? And by cancelling am i going to get charges, or have to pay the rest of my 12 month line rental while having BT?

Any help on clearing up their confusing process will be much appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

If your land line still has a dial tone on it,It will still be connected
(But not able to make calls, possibly not able to receive them either)
But at the end of the day ,if you are not paying line rental to bt ect,
How can you expect who ever is providing it to reveal it's number????
You could try paying them,Then you may get a full service.
As for Tiscali ,I would give some serious though to not renewing your contract with them,as they are THE worst isp,or certainly one of the worst in the UK.

Hey there, as it stands all ISPs have their issues and Tiscali are no better or worse than the next, however, to answer your question wot the agent you spoke to meant was that one of two things:

1) That Tiscali need to check they have unbundled your exchange, allowing them to offer the Brodband AND telephone services on your new line

2) If you are a customer with Inclusive/free line rental already you need a line that is MPF compatible (you can google this for more info!).

If you do have inc/free line rental on a current MPF line then the agent was rite to advise you to cancel as this product uses technology added by Tiscali at your old exchange. as soon as any product is cancelled or attempted to be transferred it will all cease to work!

However, if you are not on free/inc line rental DO NOT CANCEL unless you choose to do so of your own accord as you will be billed to term if still in your minimum contract period, or you will be entered into a new contract upon starting a new account. Call the 0871 222 3311 number and follow the options for a Cease and Reprovide. This process will cease your services on your old line and reprovide them on your new line. They will need your new phone number to do this, and as BT own pretty much all lines they are best placed to advise you of this. Try fonong BT wholesale for this and advise them you are now living there and are the new line owner and they should be able to advise you from there.

Hope that helps x

Sorry if I'm missing something but, if you have a dial tone on your phone, then surely you can dial out. So then all you have to do is call another phone like your mobile and then read off the telephone number of your landline

HI, just to clarify, a phone (bt landline) can still have a dial tone present, but it can be barred from making outgoing calls ect(sms, diverts)by b.t or even the bill payer if they subscribed for the barring service,
it would appear that the first time the person got connected by tiscali was by coincidence maybe,as tiscali may of been providing services to that 1stadress prior to the successive occupier moving in,so details would be on the tiscali data base, where the more recent address tiscali did not provide a service to,so it's looking like a phone call to bt,and more than likley the re-connect fee should you want a phone bb ect

This can occur when the previous owner has asked BT to turn of the phone (ie when moving out etc) or where the phone number and function has been moved to a cable service etc. In these cases, there is often a dial tone, but you won't be able to make any calls (apart from 999 iirc)
