Default New version of Windows?

I have seen computers now advertised saying that they were 'Vista' (sp) enabled. Is this taking over from XP, does this mean that if I buy a computer in the new year that within months XP will be out of date and go the same way as windows 98 (no updates). Is it worth waiting for the new one.
