Unhappy i can't get my dns from talktalk

Hi hope someone can help, i am trying to forward my port, but first i have to set up a static ip address, and i need to know what my dns is.

The problem is when i do a dns lookup on my command screen, it only returns my ip address for my router, but no dns settings or numbers, so i can't forward my port if anyone can help it would be appreciated thanks.

Hi. What command are you using to get the information? If you use ipconfig/all that should get you what you need.

Your router provides a proxy/DNS masquerade service. So in effect the router address is the correct DNS address.

I suspect you need the IP address of the PC you are on so you can portforward to it from the router,. just run

ipconfig

from dos prompt / command window should tell you

If you set a static ip on a PC or device you should also set the default route (gateway) and the DNS server to the router ip addr so it can continue to access the internet. The dns and gateway are usually set automatically from the dhcp response.

The other method as per silver's post is to leave DHCP on and set DHCP to always use the same address (sometimes done by setting a long lease time on the routers dhcp server). It would probably work without changes as most dhcp clients will request the address that they last used.
