I have been told by BT Staff recently that from April 2009 Third Party Telecomms Engineers are at liberty to move the BT Master Socket if they wish, either internally or externally.
Can any one confirm this and what do people recommend in selecting a telecomms engineer to carry out this kind of work. Essentially I am only currently getting the full speed from my broadband if I plug into the master socket, but it is badly located. I get less speed if I go into the socket on the plate and less again if I go into an extension socket. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. |

try removing the bell wire,as that will more than likely be the cause of the slower speed's using the internal extension,or the faceplate may be faulty,as there is a pcb inside it which occasionally can go down,
If someone from bt has explicitly told you that you can get the BT NTE5 moved by an other engineer than a BT OR engineer, well if it was me i would want something in writing from bt first, But if the moving of would not involve the existing incoming wires to the NTE5 being extended then they would never know,(providing it was wired correctly ) But if it was extended and say it developed a fault and you ended up getting bt or out to fix it, if they found something non standard ect, then you may end up being charged for the call out which is currently a whopping £124.99 |

O2 Access up to 8mb on a BT only exchange.
Router sync: where do I find that? I've looked all over my Netgear DG834N but cannot see any reference to it. I'm connected @ 6720 kbps down and 448 kbps up.

O2 Access up to 8mb on a BT only exchange. http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm or try logging into your router http://192.168.0.1/RST_statistics.htm takes me to the status page, but i have the version DG834G V5 Depending on the snr level that is currently set by o2 most probably via bt's DLM/Profiling system, that is known to increase the snr levels which can lower the the sync speed,Even when no apparent build of of errors are present you may be able to improve on the sync speed a bit, if this has happened by getting it reset, or asking o2 to decrease the snr's the upload figure looks like it's the bt capped rate at 448kbps,But changing the line config wont solve the congestion issues(Throughput)The correct mtu can improve throughput also on the bt network, but it also is partly down to o2 not purchasing enough back haul capacity from bt to cope with the demand Last edited by tommy t; 18-April-2010 at 02:25. |

To be honest it does tend to slow down at weekends.
I've just looked at the record I took when I first had O2 on 30/1/09 and changed to my modem/router on 31/1/09 on info given by O2. Down then was 7616 and up 448 so not a great change of connection speed since. I'll run a check again on Monday am if I can. Thanks for your help/advice.

There is some free software available that once set up will monitor you router and display the syn speeds and snrm, and error count and more it's called routerstats, and there is also a cut down version to routerstats lite |
