Hi
![]() I'm looking for people that are with AOL in the UK & Are on a contract for AOL broadband Upto 24mbps. I'd like to know if you are having problems with disconnections ![]() I've been with AOL for about 4 years now. Never had any serious problems up until the 21st April. Then... 21st April 2010 - Started a new Upto 24mbps contract with AOL. Platinum 2 | Upto 24mbps | 50GB Download Limit | Line Rental | Free UK Calls. And that's when my problems started ![]() I've suffered random but constant disconnections ever since. Note! Talk Talk owns AOL & We are all on the same Network See Here: http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forum...ad.php?t=45093 Talk Talk has admitted to the disconnection problem - & - Claim they have now fixed it - Not! ![]() See Here: http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forum...ad.php?t=44910 The Only Difference Between AOL & Talk Talk... Talk Talk People have an Official Forum where they can go for help. AOL People... Don't! ![]() Thanks! Zoe |

Hi The actual difference in speed which I get probably makes little real difference to my life, but it is the annoyance of paying for an advertised service (speed) and not getting it which bugs me, and the frustration of not being able to discuss it with someone intelligently. I sigh with relief when (very occasionally) an Irish voice answers, because you can tell immediately that they are answering your queries from their own knowledge, not looking up your question on their sheet and then reading ou the printed answer. I've been with AOL since 1997 (13 years!) and have just signed up for another 18 months when upgrading to Platinum 2. Can they force you to pay a termination fee if they have consistently failed to provide the advertised service? Sorry about this long rant but the word catharsis comes to mind - I feel better already!

Hi rayjack
![]() Don't Worry! Completely understand your frustration ![]() Might be able to Help! You're speed will depend on a few factors. 1) State of your Line ( Phone extensions can cause noise problems etc. ) 2) Attenuation ( Distance from the Exchange ) 3) Profile ( DLM may have given you a profile of... 6db - or - 9db - or - 12db - or - 15db ) First of all... Did you know that AOL runs on the same network as Talk Talk? See Here: http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forum...ad.php?t=45093 Do you know about DLM ( Dynamic Line Management ) ? Dynamic Line Management (DLM) constantly assesses the performance of the line and adjust the profile when and if it thinks it's needed. Did you know there are different speed profiles? ( Same as Talk Talk ) See Here: http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forum...ad.php?t=15531 Note! DLM might not have kicked in on your line yet ![]() My... AOL Upto 24mbps Started... 21st April 2010 DLM only started on my line... Approx: 19th June 2010 Profile... 6db Attenuation... Down = 35.0db | Up =17.3 Sync Speed... Down = 12498 | Up = 1020 Speed Test Today... Down = 9.53mbps | Up = 0.81mbps | Ping = 41 However! Before DLM kicked in on my line... Was only getting 6mbps or 7mbps - Like You! Help To Find Your Router Stats - See Here: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php Tip! If you don't think DLM has started yet. Or It Has... But it's put you on a slow profile. Try rebooting your router after dark - So that you will get a... Low Sync! That will hopefully trick DLM into kicking in and giving you a better profile

Zoe, Many thanks for your interest and help. I rebooted my router last night and had an immediate increase in bb speed. What is the significance of after dark re-booting? Different speedtest sites seem to give widely differing results. Which do you find is the most accurate? Does the choice of browser make a difference?
Once again, my thanks Ray |

Hi rayjack
![]() Rebooting a router at different times of day will give different results in sync speed. This is due to there being different levels of noise on the line at different times of the day. Low levels of Noise = High Sync High levels of Noise = Low Sync When I first got my Upto 24mbps from AOL .. I was constantly trying to sync high. Used to get really frustrated that I could never get above... Down = 10968 | up = 1020 ( Profile 12db ) Kept hoping that DLM would kick in and lower my profile to 9db or 6db .. But it never did ![]() Then one day I'd just flicked the switch on the routers power... When a strange noise started up from somewhere ![]() Hum - Hum - Hum -This really loud humming noise started! The humming noise was so loud you could actually feel the vibrations of it. ( We think it was coming from a house at the back of us. ) When I looked at my Sync Speed... Lower Than Ever! ![]() The humming noise went on and on and on - For approx 4 hours. Everyone in our street was complaining about it - & - Starting to wonder if it was ever going to stop. By the time the humming noise did stop... My son was home from school - & - I just couldn't be bothered rebooting the router at that time of day ( Thinking I'd probably sync low again at the time of 3.45pm ) However! The humming noise turned out to have done me a wonderful favour. Coz the next day... I realised DLM must have kicked in during the night - & - Given me a new profile of 9db. The next night... DLM paid me another visit - & - Gave me a profile of 6db ![]() Since DLM Kicked In! The highest sync I've got so far was... Down = 13404 | up = 1020 ( Profile 6db ) Trouble Is... If I sync too high my noise margin tends to drop quite low. This could wake up DLM - & - Could end up back on a slower profile. Low noise margin can also cause problems like slow throughput or disconnections. So... Still prefer to try and sync a little lower at say... 12000 - to - 12400 Router Reboot Rules 1) Find the ( Reboot Router) times of day that work best for - You! 2) Find it's best if the router is left off for approx 10 minutes... Then booted back up! 3) Try not to reboot your router too often. As this can upset DLM and slow you down even more ![]() Always find that... http://speedtest.net/ ... Gives the best Results! & Tend to use the same browser for my speed tests - Firefox Using the same speed test and the same browser... Makes the results easier to compare day to day. Hope This Helps!
