Default Cable broadband

Hi guys,

I have recently moved into a new flat and the landlord won't let me get a BT landline (i.e. no landline AT ALL) into the house. We need broadband internet but Virgin Media is extortionately expensive and as the flat is a basement flat mobile broadband does not receive signal (we have tried 3 different providers!) Is there anyone we can use other than Virgin?

(please note that we cannot get any of the regular Sky, Tiscali, Bulldog etc etc etc because they require you to have a BT phone line in your house and our landlord won't let us have one!)

Their cheapest broadband package is £20 a month, which seems expensive cmpared to my mum's £12 a month seems a lot!

If your landlord won't allow a BT landline why would he allow cable? Both would mean having to attach bits to the outside of the house and drilling holes into it.

I think Virgin are the only company who currently offer cable, but I'm a bit surprised by your "extortionately expensive" claim. They regularly come at or near the top of list of cheap suppliers.

I haveno idea why he will allow us to have cable and not a BT landline, it makes no sense to me either! He has just said, I won't allow a BT landline, you need to get cable. Perhaps he doesn't understand that cable broadband also requires drilling :0P

O.K.... maybe I went a bit overboard with extortionately lol! I think in comparison with some of the other packages available they are expensive. All we want is the internet, we aren't interested in a TV service or a landline with free calls and Virgin only seem to come up cheap when you buy all three of their services at once.

is a tricky one,. perhaps the mobile broadband could be made to work if you somehow hooked up an external aerial (not sure it's possible or practical!)

other option might be someone else in the flats/nearby has broadband and wireless and you could work out a deal with them so you could use their connection?

We did try an aerial of sorts, with one of our mobile broadband deals we received a wireless router/signal booster device which we placed on our windowsill (the only place we get mobile phone signal!) but the mobile broadband still kept dropping out and ran extremely slowly, both with and without a wired connection.

I do like the idea of using someone else's connection though, if there are no other cable companies. I am still hoping that smallworld media might move into our area, I know they are about the same price as Virgin, but their customer service can't possibly be as bad!

I am not advocating using someone elses connection w/o their permission but it is suprising how many open wireless networks there are, at one point our wireless router dropped out and one of the laptops ended up on a neighbours wireless network w/o us even noticing..

perhaps see if there's an open wireless network, find out who's it is and offer to close it for them and see if they will allow you to add yourself to their connection

Oh gosh I did mean with permission! Looking back it did sound like I was going to just steal it, didn't it!

I think it is the only option left, I shall have to ask about a bit I think.
