I`ve not set one up at home, but I`ve played about with some wireless kit at work.

Its very nice indeed, although still a bit pricey. The cards aren`t too bad but if you want to integrate with a wired network you`ll need an access point which are v expensive.

The range is pretty impressive, and it will go through thick walls without reducing the speed too much. Large metal objects will cause problems though.

The speed is pretty good, I was getting a fairly consistent 400-500KBytes/sec with the access point about 20m away in another room.

The only flaw is the almost total lack of security, pretty much anyone can drive by with a laptop, connect to your network and break the rather lax built in security.

You should be able to lock down your network somewhat by using a personal firewall on each pc and restrict access to only your pcs. (can they do filtering on MAC addresses ? that`d do the trick nicely )

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the reply.

If I go ahead it will be on two pc's initially one desktop and the other a laptop with a range of 30-40 feet.

If I understand it correctly I will not need an access point at this stage as i'm not integrating it with a wired network. But please correct me if i'm wrong

For an Ad-Hoc or Peer-To-Peer network such as you suggest SV, an access point is not required.

There's actually quite a lot of interesting info available on Wireless LAN's....

Take a look here : Wireless Networking FAQ

thanks for the link Onslo

it's very tempting to purchase the equipment (although pricey!)
but hey how many people can say they surf with their laptop on their knees whilst sitting on the toilet

How many people would admit to that in the first place?

How many people would WANT to admit that.
I do hope that you do not plan to use a videophone.
