Default Windows 2000 or Linux??

After having a mini HDD scare on my comp today I thought it was about time I got my planned server up and running, but was wondering about the operating system, Windows 2000 or Linux??

I love Windows 2000 but have yet to still mess with Linux, any suggestions??

The server is

200 MMX
64 megs of ram
9.1 Gig SCSI HDD
USB Card

I'll be hooking it into my LAN via the usb connection on my router.

Really it depends on what you are intending to do with it ?

For just a simple file server (and perhaps web server), linux is probably too much hassle (although samba is one of the easier linux apps to set up)

OTOH, that spec is a little low for win2k, but is just right for linux.

an easy way to run a file/web/mail/ntp/etc server using linux is something along the lines of E-smith, http://www.e-smith.org/ it has a web and console based configuration and is also a firewall should you need it. It uses an old kernel and has no support for USB though ....

If you must have usb then you`ll need one of the newer releases (mandrake 8.2, redhat 7.3)

Just had to set the machine up for Windows 2000 now as my main system decided that it was going to drop all my hdd's out so here I am using the said 200 MMX system with Windows 2000.

Basically it's going to end up as a file server for my own personal use as today's scare with my IBM 40 gig drive means that your data needs to be a little safer.

It does appear a little on the slow side, but it's certainly useable.
