Default Yet Another USB Problem

Hi, I'd be grateful if any1 had any idea about a USB prob I'm having.
I have an old comp that I tried to connect an Epsom 580 to just to free up main comp from long printing jobs. It didnt have onboard USB so I installed a VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB card. The card seems to install fine as does the printer (& a film & neg scanner).
I can start a print job & off it goes NP, but halfway thru it stops & I jus get a message saying communication error.

mobo-pc chips TX pro 2
proc-amd K6 233

Any ideas?
Thx in advance (hopefully :->)

Can you turn off "spooling" for the printer?

It will tie up the pc when printing, but it has been known to fix all mannor of printing problems.
