Default movie files on DVD Player

I have some movies files mpg. VOB xvid etc
I would like to see these movies on a DVD player-is it possible to put these files on DVD-r disk and watch it on my DVD player?
I assume you have to use some software conversion to do this ?please let me know what to use!!1
are there certain file types that are "dvd files" and u can burn them straight onto the disk(without converting)?
and is the quality good?

I hope u guys/gals can help me here it would really be appreciated.

Vob are normal dvd files just explore a dvd and you will see.

I use nerovison express 3 to make my dvds or vcds from divx movies or mpgs you just add the files and let it do the encoding a normal 700mb divx film can take around 3 hours to convert to dvd format , depends on your cpu speed and ram.

{:@< I have tried this with Nero Vision Express, but when I start the decoding process before it burns toa DVD disc, it gets stuck? I know it should take about 3 hours, but half way it just stays there and I have to go into task manager to abort the project?
I have 512MB RAM and a 80GB hard drive with Athalon XP2100 chip.

Any Ideas? Oh yes, before I installed Nero Vision, I had to upgrdae my Direct X from Microsoft?

Easiest way I have found is to
- Convert the downloaded .avi .divx .mpg .wmv or other media file to dvd format(.vob) using WinAviConverter (available through TPB)
- Burn that to a DVD-r using Roxio Easy Media Creator Disc Copier.
- Play in any PAL region DVD player to watch.
- Easy.

do a search for a a document called "Pilgrims Guide to DVD Authoring"... tad old now, and v2 seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet... but you never know.

in my experience if you have a dvd player which is possitive based then you need to burn on + discs. the uk dvd players are pal based the usa use ntc. i use nero 7 and then copy files onto my phillips recorder, which is + based. moruman.
