Default want to upgrade motherboard/cpu/memory

My PC (3GHz P4 2G RAM) is 7 years old now and struggles a little when running a virtual machine in VMware.

It's a big and quite stylish case, so I figured an ATX motherboard combo upgrade would be OK. I have no idea what is good spec these days? I know I want:
  • USB 3
  • Plenty of DDR3 memory
  • Another 7 years!

But beyond that I don't know. I suppose my IDE hard drives will have to go? What about the power supply? And my IDE DVD writer - and floppy.. Didn't want to spend more than about 300.

Any suggestions - or should I be looking at a new PC?

tricky, the thing is a new case and psu are not the pricey bits of a new build,. I think for the effort of messing around with an old case you just as well start from the start

well to put another way a nice case and decent PSU together is less than 70 quid (ok it's not nothing but...)

To be honest unless you want certain extras your better off getting a ready built system, like an i5 sub 400 incl windows 7

Acer Predator G5900 Desktop
Acer Predator G5900 Desktop, Core i5 650 3.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, GF GT340, Windows 7 Home

or

Desktops PC, Core i5 2310 2.9GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVDRW, HD 2000, Windows 7 Home Premium 64W7HP

Agree with Scoobs. A new system ready built is probably cheaper . far less prone to brain strain getting the right bits to match. A newish processor (I5/I7) would mean a new motherboard, which would mean new memory and power supply as the old ones wouldn't connect/fit or be powerful enough. I have built many many over the years ( the last 40!). So many things to consider but then you do get a system that does what you want. If your needs are specific e.g gaming, Video editing then you need a decent processor, large HDD and a really good graphics card (this can be suprisingly expensive) eating over your 300 quid itself. Look for the deals. Watch out if it is a SANDYBRIDGE processor There is a known fault with early ones -they WILL fail. See my post from FEB http://www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/t30747.html?

Thanks for all the suggestions and info. I will go with a ready-made. Will probably wait until Xmas now though - new exhaust suddenly takes priority.
