Default Napster Struggles with Building Fingerprint Database

from computerwire.com
Napster Inc was suffering its third embarrassing day of downtime yesterday, as it struggles to build a database of digital fingerprints of copyrighted music tracks. The company shut down file trading altogether, after realizing the system was blocking both the legal and illegal tracks.

The company, in order to comply with a court injunction, is using technology from Relatable Inc and a database of tracks from LoudEye Inc to construct a database of digital IDs that recognize copyrighted work. The work involves fingerprinting WAV files from LoudEye's collection using Relatable's software, but it is the database built by Napster that is causing the problems, a spokesperson said.

The effort is part of Napster's move to legitimize its service and comply with a court order that forbids it from allowing its users to trade pirated music. The company stressed that the database is only one part of the full subscription-based Napster that had previously been touted for launch July 1.

The current target date for a legal Napster is "this summer". A spokesperson said that at first the regular Napster service will allow users to trade only tracks from independent labels that have signed deals with the company. The firm will also rebrand RealNetworks Inc's white-label MusicNet service, which will give users access to music from BMG, Warner Music and EMI, three of the Big Five labels.

The Napster spokesperson said that the company has yet to announce whether it will allow MusicNet tracks to be traded over the peer-to-peer network at any point in the future. At first, it will not.
