Question Tesco broadband speed

Can anyone tell me why when i right click on my Thompson Speedsearch internet connection it comes up with. Connected speed 2.2 mbps. Surely this is an error. Tesco are not that good surely.

I think that is misleading, it's probably the max speed that modem could run at ?

either way to know how fast your connection really is try http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp - and paste the url to the result page so we can all see

Mine says its connected at 1.1mbps.

As long as you get a download rate of 60k all is well. AS suggested use a speed test site. e.g. http://www.testmy.net

I'm a tesco techie, and many people ask this question. 2.2 Mb is the maximum speed that the exchange server you are attached to is capable of. Your real speed will be 512kbps

So what if it does? Your connection is still running at the correct speed.

those connection speeds look perfectly fine to me...whilst many of them don't appear to be that high, for peak periods I would say that they are acceptable

You have to bear in mind that you'll only get the faster speeds when not too many people are sharing the connection

Out of all thoses tests only 1 is about right for 512 service the 58 KB/sec

The others at 22 , 23 , 45 KB/sec etc are crap i get faster upload than some of those results for downstream.

definately report it to Tesco - it could be a capacity issue or a fault at the exchange

Hi all. Found this forum due to the slow connection of my Tesco broadband. Anyway since Friday 11th March my connection has been getting slower and slower. I have been e-mailing the tech line since to get things checked and i though that it had been fixed on the 13th as the download speed was running at 60k. But after a night of downloading films it was back to the sme slow connection. This is the last test at 18:00 tonight
Downstream 150 Kbps (18.8 KB/sec) 162 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 242 Kbps (30.3 KB/sec) 261 Kbps (inc. overheads)

And it was a lot slower than that. My thought was that they may be limiting the download speeds ??
This is all P****** me right off.

Spugun

Remember that this is all covered by The Sale of goods act etc .. M<ust be "fit for purpose" etc . If the service is not what they said it woul dbe and they dont fix it - there should be no cancellation fee .

I had a simiilar problem with poor connection speed - left Tesco with no disconnect fee and got a refund for my monthly fees as well... Tesco still dont have there act together on on this. Speak to OFCOM etc they will speak to Tesco on your behalf to try and help resolve the issue.

I think poeple thought that Tesco would be OK , but dont realise that it is NTL that provide the service.

( another thing to note is that the Tesco service is Datastream - which can be poor and they have full control over the traffic, you should look at IPstream ISP's - they provide a better service in my opinion)

Stand your ground on no disconnect fee , you dont need to pay to be disconected from a substandard service. Only point is that they are slow to disconect you need to keep hasslsing them to ghet the disconnect - they lied about that to me - until I contacted BT direct to find out the true story.

Good luck

As far as I'm aware the generally position with refunds is that Tesco ask for a "reasonable period of time" in which to fix faults. As they have to deal with BT and NTL this is generally set at 10 working days.

If you want unlimited with no ports blocked and a good connection have a look @ Pipex or Eclipse not the cheapest but good speeds and connection.

Or you could get Talktalk @ 14.99 i think for unlimited but i cant say if they are good or not as i don’t use them, offer till end of march.

That is very slow. I would check to see if there are capacity issues with your exchange:

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

and if they are both green then contact tesco quoting the speeds, though it maybe a good idea to do a few over a couple of days
