Question Monitor switches off playing CALL OF DUTY 4

HELPPPPPPPPPPPP !

Whenever I start playing COD4 (thanks Skullptura), it play fine for say 30 minutes, then my monitor just switches off and the green power light goes orange and refuses to turn back on..... I can still hear the sound playing and the game is obviously running, but the monitor won't turn back on.

I have to give up, and hold the PC power button in until it turns off, then turn it on again and boot up before playing again

Anyone else had this prob please?

Athlon 2500 CPU
2Gb RAM
Sapphire HD4550 graphics card with 512mb RAM and latest drivers
14" HP CRT monitor
Windows XP Home SP2

Even that "system requirement labs" site says my system easily passes the minimum needed to play COD 4.

Confused and annoyed,
MegaT.

NB - I am not connected to the internet when playing, I have no screensavers kicking in or no power saving modes kicking in either, and my A/V is disabled also

Could be that your graphics card is on it's way out. I had a similar problems with CoD:WW and CoD4. Eventually my graphics died completely (just after I updated the driver interestingly) and I had to get a new card - no problems since then.

Thumbs down Re: Monitor switches off playing CALL OF DUTY 4

Ahem.... what's worrying me is that this IS a brand new graphics card, my Sapphire Radeon HD4550

Everything else works fine, Paint Shop Pro, word processing, watching DVDs etc

yep - it seems more likely to be the gcard than the monitor itself, try running the game at reduced graphics for that period or keep the side of the PC off and put a fan pointing at it - might be overheating?

It's worth mentioning that Paint Shop Pro, word processing and yes, even watching DVDs won't really tax a graphics card too much. It's usually only when you throw one of the more recent games at it that it'll get a full work out.

Here's something you could try: download GPU-Z, run it and click on the "Sensors" tab, check both of the boxes at the bottom (make a note of where it says it's going to put the log - or change it to somewhere you'll remember. NB: be careful, this file could get quite big), then start your game up. The log file should show if your card is getting too hot.

yeah - that's a good idea,. there might also be various 'stress testing' apps for gcards that are free,. just run one of those perhaps instead of needing to run the game

If my memory serves me correct doesn't everest not also do this, without the big log file? like real time ish? just a thought, also you could un-install the latest gpu driver and try a earlier one? making sure all main traces have been deleted before installing a different driver, inc reg entries ccleaner may do the trick,(a free ware programe)

Will try Everest possibly.

Would a USB fan help if plugged into the back of the base unit then pointed onto the graphics card?????

have you not got any case fans in your box? i recently put 2 in mine push/pull config @front/back it certainly runs cooler now,and for the small price of the fans well worthwhile, incidentally cod4 isn't considered that demanding compared to some other games, this problem may also be software related or a registry error perhaps,

Mega: there's no need to post the complete log, just have a look through and let us know what the start temperature is and the maximum.

I did a bit of searching and most sites are reporting a maximum of around 55C for the Sapphire card.

I think I've highlighted the important column above in red correctly, and take it 91.0 degrees is not good and even dangerous?

I couldn't even figure out how to get Everest to do a graphics card temperature test....

I know I can (hopefully) add them, but do they just connect to a spare PSU molex type connector or do they need to be connected to the MOBO, if so, this is what I have in my lovely now defunct eBuyer MAXDATA PC (ingore the red squiggles, thats from when I was asking about upgrading the onboard graphics a while back)!

case fan is a spinny thing that attaches to the case and sucks air in or blows it out,. similar to the one inside the PSU but it's not inside the PSU,. most times it's easiest to attach by molex - sometimes you can do either

looking at the log it sure does suggest an overheating problem, you can test for whether a case fan may help - take side of case off and direct a desk fan into the PC,. do same test / logging as before and see what if any changes

Question Re: Monitor switches off playing CALL OF DUTY 4

Hi again, this is the lastest log file (well, the last 5 entries) after having taken the side panel off, and installed an 8cm case fan (taken out of an older defunct PC) and connected directly to an existing 4 pin molex.

Good news is.... it let me finish the game with over 90 minutes game play without even crashing / switching off the monitor!

Thing is now, is that the graphics card feels very hot still (just putting my fingers near it, NOT touching it), and the freshly installed case fan ruins the silentness of this PC now

Can't have it both ways I guess.... is it still getting too hot?

P.S. "COD4" is a great game, and this graphics card has totally p***ed all over the onboard GPU like I never imagined it could for 45, but this game was way too short for one player mode

Would one of these help me? They're just under a fiver and googling it seems to get positive reviews even though I lose a PCI slot?

sounds as if this is a work around solution, before you put the case fan in,when you were playing cod4,did the gpu fan speed up or slow down,(could you hear the tone change)if not there maybe a speed issue with the onboard fan,but those temps seem ok,and if you can play for long times without problems then it should be ok,i did try and find info on your gpu,to find out what temp range its supposed to run at,but no success as yet,but if i find some i'll post it for you, also the reason for it getting hotter than normal, could be dust buiding up in it,i had loads in mine,a natural bristle half inch paint brush, and a can of dry compressed air,air duster are good at clearing it from fans ect

No problems to report since adding the above akasa fan blower and separate 8cm fan at the back of the case (can't believe it never had one in the first place!). Now happily fighting through COD: World At War with no monitor problems
