I've just received an email advising that The Scream! is closing.

Looking back I see I joined on 22 September 2001. That was back in the days when we only had dial up - dial up was a new service. I've forgotten the details but back in those days the forums provided a great source of support and advice in relation to the service that was (or wasn't) provided by the company that gave ground breaking free internet access. Was it Localtel? I treasure and love my screaming.net email address and it will be said if I ever loose it.

Over the years the service became WorldonLine, Tiscali, Talk Talk. I'm no longer with Talk Talk. The services had billing and connection issues. I may have missed out some detail.

I no longer use The Scream! but back in the early 2000s it was so helpful.

Love to you all

]What a shame.. but it's all our fault for not using it. I personally didn't post much.. very little really, but have used the excellent advice that was given. l used to look in regularly years ago but always felt rather intimidated to post because l lacked tech knowledge.
A great shame.. and my thanks to all the old posters.

Agree wholeheartedly with what 306 said.
And I want to say a big thank you to all the wonderful people who have helped me a non-techie over the years. You know who you are.
Recently I've been through the cancer hell but a year later am still here.
I always turned to The Scream when there was nowhere else and the patience of the folks here was always tested.
I still use the web but drifted off to weird stuff like UFOs and the paranormal which would have been a little odd here.
Special thanks to - was it Silver? - I think he lived near me in Bournemouth.
Hi Ho Silver! You're a star!

Localtel/Worldonline/Tiscali etc. I never had any technical issues with them at all and in fact had well over had 20 months of free internet at a saving of £40/mth from them when they apparently lost a whole load of billing/customer data. They didn't even know the names or addresses of the customers that had ADSL.

Anyone else remember this email?

That's a shame to hear it's closing, been here since 2004, have looked in quite often but not posted.

Did not get an email BTW heard elsewhere that it was closing!

Very sad day!

The scream was a real life saver for me.

It's been 9 years this week since I lost & this place let me get some of my worst feelings off my chest, with lots of emotional support from a lot of people.

So thanks to Worldlife, Silver, Gem, Twinkle, Tia, Memfis, Puggsley, Scoobs & everyone else.

Just a quick update to anyone who remembers me......I'm married with a new & very happy! I never would have believed it could happen, but it did.

Take care everyone.

Very very sad news indeed. What a shock I got when I read the email.
I joined this forum many years ago when hundreds of us were were suffering at the hands of Localtel. It ended up being my first port of call for many years when I went on line every day. I received great advice here, and met a few characters along the way.
I would love this website to never close, but I suppose all good things must come to an end.
Thanks to all the admins for their great work over the years. And thanks to all the members who helped me out giving me great advice. I'll remember this place with fondness.

P.S I feel now is the time to make a confession. GrumpyFooker was me!!

Big Shame. For me it was at times the first port of call for technical issues before I went to google. I would be sat there thinking I am sure someone had the same problem on scream and off I would go to have a look.

I still look in to scream from time to time that's how I found out about this, no email.

The Scream has lots of useful information, guidance and advice hidden around the site and should be archived.

Add me to the list of those who will miss the forum. According to my profile, I joined in 2003, but I think I actually joined earlier in 2001 under a different name, which I forget now.
I'd also like to thank those who offered help for those irritating computer problems, especially getting wifi routers to work correctly !

I'm currently on another general social website for the over 50's age group, so if anyone feels like coming over to say hello there, it's this one :-
http://www.fiftyplusforum.co.uk
I go under the 'handle' of 'Bandana' over there

Cheers folks, and all the best to everyone.

Post Re: The SCREAM is closing!

Such a sad time. I will miss this forum and all the lovely people who have helped me out and given me support over the years.
I really missed the Christmas Comp when it didn't happen last year too!! It used to make the year bearable when I knew I had that to look forward to at the end of it! I liked it even more when I won!!
Even though I don't come on as often as I used to, I make a point of logging in every so often, just to keep in touch and catch up with stuff, will miss not doing that. Good luck & good health to you all in the future and thank you to all those who have worked in the background to make this forum what it was and keep it going for so long.
Whatever you do and wherever you go, may your God go with you. Goodbye all, I leave you, a sad Screamer. Thank you all for enriching my life and making those extra bad days more bearable.

Phew- think when I was last posting regularly we were dealing with Windows 98 problems!

Hope I made up for my lack of technical knowledge and skills by initiating and participating what were sometimes long provocative discussions in the general forum.

Over the last decade I have been Chair of a large table tennis club here in Sussex. Much time and effort was needed to develop what is now a successful Junior section and at last I have been able to "retire" with an excellent new management team in place,

My fighting spirit has been maintained through a recent heart bypass operation with a complaint to the Financial Services Ombudsman about extra unexpected charges when I have what I thought was a comprehensive private medical insurance policy.

It was like red rag to a bull when one of the specialist bills had a footnote on it that a delayed payment would result in debt collectors being instructed and the collection charges added to the original bill.

I thought of "The Scream" and the actions of Tiscali in instructing debt
collectors to deal with what were questionable charges and the excellent
advice we gave to people contacting the forum.

What a coincidence in the week that has happened I received the email
stating the "The Scream" was to close.

Great to see some familiar names are still posting and special thanks to all
those who developed and maintained such an excellent forum

Best wishes to all and a happy retirement to the team that have kept 'The Scream' up and running!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Another Scream souvenir I have came from input into a mobile phone thread. It is a tiny metallic red Nokia ex contract one and it was kindly sent to me from a screamer who felt sorry about my PAYG phone. I think Gem may have been the kind donor? That tiny phone, probably a decade old, is still running on the original battery and has been grabbed by my wife for her handbag!

Post Re: The SCREAM is closing!

Nice to see you are still around Worldlife... since the news has spread about The Scream! closing down, I have seen a lot of the old names appearing again, it;s like a sad reunion!!

That's what I used to like about this forum, the one thing that set it apart from all the other forums... it's members. The majority of them were like the one who sent you the phone, nice, kind, empathetic people who genuinely cared about the other members.

There were, of course, the odd one or two who could make you have murderous thoughts and start picking the spot under the patio!!

Thankfully, these were few and far between and most of us could have sensible discussions on many topics, listening to each others points of view without taking things personally. I will definitely miss that.

I know it's early but as this is the last time I'll get to say it to you all, I would just like to wish you a Very Merry Christmas & an even Happier New Year. May next year be your best yet. xx

lol @ beef "P.S I feel now is the time to make a confession. GrumpyFooker was me!!" haha - v good

the i'net was shiney and new and over the years we all learnt a lot and together,. I built my first PC w/ help from people here and all kinds of other stuff about how i'net works (or how to break the website)

it's of course down to the group of people who frequented the forums and made it a fun / interesting (/sometimes annoying) place to hang out,. and special thanks to 'the team' - old and new who spent countless hours holding the place together with bits of sticky tape and occasional sleepless nights
