News! Hackers Claim Millions of Snapchat Usernames and Phone Numbers

It's happening all over the place right now. A vulnerability, previously identified four months earlier, was exploited after an upgrade and some obscured date shown as evidence. Snapchat had previously dismissed this claiming that they had implemented safeguards and counter-measures to make it more difficult to do.

Luckily, they only have 4.6 million members and one of them is not me! Every single one of them is at risk of having their name and telephone number tied together because effective security was just plain not present! The data obtainable does reveal a little bit more in that it shows account type: whether public or private, username and display name.

You can read more detail at Sophos.

The thing is that kids have taken a dislike to FaceBook because of privacy concerns and mainly from their parents. Snapchat is just one of the many alternatives they have turned to. As is obvious, a phone number can reveal a general location. What are the chances these Members are using the same name on other platforms? This could pose a big risk for some people!

Be careful out there!

Snapchat Founder Says 'We Thought We Had Done Enough' (Reuters)

No, sorry, not good enough. It's not very hard to rate limit a service.

“In a business that’s moving so quickly,” he explained, “if you spend your time looking backwards, you’re just going to kill yourself.”
There is more than one way to kill yourself.

No apology or anything. The "solution" is to allows users to opt out of the Find Friends feature.
