Default Watching BBC Iplayer Abroad

I am going to Australia tomorrow and wanted to use BBC I-Player and Channel 4 catch up services to watch various TV programs that I will otherwise miss.

Is there a way to fool these websites into thinking I am in the UK so I can watch the content?

Thanks.

I've heard that you can use a UK proxy to fool it, but i've never tried it.

I don't want to get into any "legality" issues here about UK license payers and the BBC, but a UK based Socks proxy is should do the trick.... probably best to try it first in the UK to ensure that you get good speeds.

Personally I would set one up myself on my home connection and secure it against use from anyone else (if possible) and maybe even make some money out of it.... oh wait a minute, well well well , what d'ya know

Hey have fun down under. I wouldn't count on being able to get any of the proxies working - I tried and gave up. Best set the video!

I finally found CCProxy (free) works fine and is really easy to install on XP. You have to leave your home pc on and accessible via the internet (you will need to open a port on your firewall). If you don't have a fixed IP you can use no-ip.com to have a fixed URL.

You need to change your laptop browser to use your proxy. This is easy and there are instructions.

Happy travels.

Hope it supports authentication, otherwise anyone could use it. including spammers.

Thanks for the warning Memfis. Yes, you can create three users (on the free version) and they need to log on with passwords. It's a bit like using a wifi hotspot. The users can only connect through their browsers (they set their browser to use a proxy for connection). You can see when they are connected and the URLs they visit are logged. It's possible to set all sorts of restrictions but I found the defaults worked just fine.

It was only possible to watch the iplayer content, not to download it - even though I already had the download manager installed.

Download Manager would need proxy settings too.

Good to hear that it supports authentication.

typical that you should need to spoof your ip,should you be outside the uk, T.V. LICENSING bull sh*t strikes again, unless you use a g.p.r.s (3G) type dongle thingy as i know someone who regularly watches the crap (itv bbc ) from abroad via the wireless web dongle without any probs,i cannot believe the bbc think that the crap(most of tv programs ) are worth wile protecting so much, the mind certainly boggles on that 1 my son, what a load of tosh

I live in the canary islands and have been watching UK TV using TVProxy http://www.tvproxy.co.uk for about 6 months now, tried several others but this is by far the most reliable. Costs 10 euros per month, cheaper if you sign up for longer. It's easy to set up, just on bit of code in your system prefs. Support is great too.

I use one called Telly Britain (at tellybritain.com).

Been using it for a while now. Didn't have to change any settings on my pc at all, they just send you a TV player and you run it.. dead simple.

I was using hidemyip but it got pretty unreliable in the end. Never had a problem with the above. Recommended.

OK ome info to do this ,very simple

very easy to watch BBC iplayer all over the world
just got a web page
click tools
click internet options
click connections tab
click LAN SETTINGS button
in this box type 195.110.9.244 port 3128

this is a UK proxy server so it looks like your coming from the UK

THANTS It !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy

you can also speed up your internet by using OPEN DNS

Also made it work for Sky go online player too

For OPEN DNS to speed up internt

goto opendns website to explain. it is free

no application needed. just a simple DNS change

you just add in one of thier DNS server ip address to your adaptor settings

primary 208.67.222.222
secondary 208.67.220.220

It makes your internet faster(though only noticable on slow connections like dial up or very slow broadband) I found it speeded up my tethering broadband using my mobile phone on my laptop at 16k and almost doubled the speed.

So far I have not noticed any problems getting web pages using this.
Open DNS also have DNS ip addresses to enter on your kids computers so they cannot goto porn sites etc. All free

It works because they have very fast efficient Domian name server database that trawl and store the worlds DNS translation, just like google does but dedicated to this one task so they are faster look up tables than googles.and way faster than you ISP Name to IP translation database servers .Thus it has another benefit in that if your ISP DNS servers go down you can still use the internet by using these DNS servers from opendns.

If you wanto record BBC iplayer then downloads Get iplayer . it is not part of the BBC , it is a opensource app for windows or Mac

The websites have become smarter ! VPN rarely works now-a-days. The best (and safe) bet is to use some DNS services. There are many available in the market ! (just google it). Or you can try www.unotelly.com I have tried their free service and found it to be quite reliable. The service is also great. A number of good channels (like cbs, spotify) are available for free and their rate is also low for most premium channels.

I donít know if you are aware of the fact that your IP address can be seen by others whenever you visit a website, and with that information, they are able to see your location. Also Internet providing companies restrict what websites you can visit when you sign up for their service. I think no one should be able to tell me what to look or not look at on my own computer. Their job is to provide me with a good connection, and as long as I pay for it, why do they care what I do? For all this reasons now I am using VPN Services to hide my IP address and surf the Internet anonymously.

Changing your IP probably is the easiest way to get access to BBC iPlayer from UK & Hulu from US. Seem to be hundreds of sites that offer the service for a fee. I did a free trial with http://www.laptoptelly.com, connected well enough, would like to know a free alternative though.

Ive been surfing around trying to find the cheapest UK VPN for iPlayer in Spain.
Most are in dollars I think. This one looks about the best I saw Ä2.99 month.

Only trouble with the Hotspot Shield is that it seems to be bundled with spyware, not too sure Channel 4OD works on it either now.
Best bet I guess is to go for a paid service, but one that's cheap enough.
I saw this one for 2.99

With Streaming VPN, I am able to stream my favorite videos and audios in highest possible quality. I am happy that I can watch BBC Iplayer outside the UK at countries like Canada and that without any other obligations.

Hello, I came across this post while researching the issue myself, with family in Australia wanting to access BBC iPlayer in the UK. So I documented the DIY approach I used.

If you are not afraid for roll up your sleeves and dive into Linux and The Cloud, this guide shows how to implement a solution to get around geo-restrictions for BBC iPlayer:

http://blog.belodedenko.me/2014/12/w...-for-free.html

A similar solution can also be used to watch US Netflix form the UK:

http://blog.belodedenko.me/2014/02/d...tunlr-vps.html

In any case, depending on where you host your proxy server, these solutions can be adapted for most of the restricted services around the world.

Also, having a few friends share a solution like this is significantly cheaper than individually paying $5 a month for a commercial service.
