Hi
I am just about to set up my network at home, subscribe to a broadband supplier and install an IPCop firewall. I have read some IPCop posts here and on other sites (including the IPCop site) and I am a bit confused as to how to set it up. I have already got an 8 port hub but no ADSL modem yet. I think I need to come in from the phone line through a basic ADSL modem out via a network cable into the IPCop 'in' network card out from 'out' network card into the hub and then to all the work stations. The poblem is the modem. Can I use any modem or does it have to be a PCI modem and if so does it have to be the one that is compatible with IPCop? Also what would be good to have from my ISP in the broadband package - Static IP address, DCHP, DNS PHP etc? ( I am currently looking at either PlusNet or Zen.) Hope someone can help Fritz

Hi Fritz,
you've pretty well got it ![]() the modem can be USB - speedtouch USB ADSL and speedtouch 330 work so far as I know.,. using a USB modem you can plug it straight into IPCop (if box has usb). PCI ADSL cards I am less sure about there's a hardware compatibility list on the ipcop site, so check that first.. > http://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/v...op/IPCopHCLv01 the bits you need from the ISP are upto you,. all will come with DNS and DHCP,. I'd personally go for static IP as it makes stuff easier to host on your connection (if indeed this is something you want to do) php - is something to do with a webserver generally,. so if the ISP offers webspace then it may or may not have php capability,. again if you are going to run your own webserver then you don't need space from the ISP. Sil PS, the other option is not to use IPcop and get an ADSL modem router,. - some info in <thread>:Make Your Own Router - secrets revealed - I like IPCop setup but views differ

I am now building my firewall and have ordered some secondhand ISA 3com NICs and an USB card from Ebay. Thanks for the help.
Just about to order the broadband from Eclipse but not sure do I need a static or fixed IP? (I was thinking of setting up an Exchange server to handle the email side of things but that was only as a way of learning how to do it and not completely essential).

If you are thinking of serving stuff then fixed IP makes things easier (though you can still host on dynamic IPs using some type of hostname > ip lookup system),.
I have 5 fixed IPs with eclipse (I think they were free/cheap) but you need to provide justification (not too hard to make something up! ).The flip side is that fixed IPs means websites could 'know you' by you via IP or somehow track you but it's a matter of how you look at these things ![]() Sil |

I knew this was going to be the hard bit
My setup is: speedtouch 330 USB modem PCI USB card 3Com 3c509 NIC (ISA) Eclipse broadband with DNS, DCHP, dynamic IP Seems to have instaaled OK but: what about drivers for the modem what do I do about IP address and what do I do at root@ipcop" prompt? The installation guide may as well have been written in Sanskrit.

what about drivers for the modem ip addys? guess you mean other comps on your network ipcop could be 192.168.0.40 then comp one would be 192.168.0.41 and so on root@prompt you dont need to do anything there if you go to another comp on the network you can loginto ip cop from there just open your browser and type https://192.168.0.**:445 ** would be ipcop ip you gave it, then put admin in username box athen password and you will be in then you can set up the modem etc Silver has a good post on ipcop Here ***Edit heres link to download the modem mgmt file you will see in the settings where to upload it to. 330 mgmt file ill remove link in morning Last edited by Scoobs; 11-March-2004 at 22:49. |
