Hi,
Noticed on the minimum requirements it mentions Win SE but not the original Win 98. Does anyone know for sure if Win 98 first edition has any problems? Thanks in advance. Sammy |

Hi Sammy..... Welcome to The Scream!
Have you considered updating your version of Windows 98 by getting the service packs.. Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer. You need to be running a version of Internet Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update. Download the latest version of Internet Explorer Once Internet Explorer is installed, you can Go to the Windows Update Site If you prefer to use a different Web browser, updates to Windows may be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. I think the main problem was that Win 98 did not cater particularly well for USB and most ADSL modems use USB (a few are built in).

Gem....I'm running this computer on W98SE ....have added USB v2 card for video work and my ADSL wireless router is plugged into one of the three new sockets.
The original sockets work fine for slower devices such as USB printers. ADSL modems and SanDisk flash Disc. Maybe my satisfactory service is due to the fact that I am still using Hewlett Packard's installation disc for the operating system and basic hardware |

Yes that Ok, it was Win 98 that I was referring not not Win 98SE.
My original PC came with Win98 and had USB sockets. I found out (the hard way!) that 98 (first edition) did not support USB but a subsequent release (prior to SE and not generally available) DID support USB.

win98 had *limited* usb support - so some USB will work on win98,. win98SE fixed the usb stuff so all / most USB will work on win98SE,.
you may get away with a win98 box but you may find you are forced to use 98SE or a later OS do you have a spare old box you could config as a dedicated router ? or buy a cheap router an then you can use ethernet to connect your win98 box to the i'net over adsl ![]() Sil |

Thanks for the replies and also the welcome from Worldlife.
Looks like it's going to be an upgrade to Win 98 SE then. Sammy |

Hi,
Having scoured the net it looks like the Win upgrade to Win 98 SE would(apart from ICS and a few other features) not really be any different to the Win 98 with all current updates. The modem should be ok and there have been no problems so far as other Usb peripherals are concerned. Does anyone know if the BT Yahoo Broadband software installs ok on Win 98 first edition? Thanks in advance. Sammy |
