IMHO it's worth getting a router (even if you only have one PC) you can get a cheapie from ebuyer for £25, and they are a cinch to install, with both of the ones I used I did not need to install anything not even drivers, it was simply a job of plugging it in and entering my Aol screen name and password and you are on line, you don't need any Aol software or anything.

Yeah no chance of getting any other type of modem, the only one they actually have to send out is the voyager 105, the modem itself isnt usually to bad, it usually comes down to power management or chipset, what was the driver date of your intel chipset, I would put money on it being 2001, that could maybe have been your problem? |

AOL HAVE TOLD ME I CANT CONNECT BECAUSE MY DRIVER SAYS 9/12/2001 IHAVE WINDOWS XP HOW DO I UPDATE (AZTECH CNRV.92 MODEM PROPERTIES)CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP PLEASE The driver would be for the USB controller on the motherboard. If you go to the control panel and switch to classic view double click the SYSTEM icon click onto the HARDWARE tab click onto the DEVICE MANAGER button and when the device manager opens up scroll down to where it shows Universal Serial Bus Controllers and in there you will have a USB host controller main chipsets are VIA SIS Intel look at the driver date for the host controller not the root hub. This should at least tell you which chipset it is and from there it is downloading the correct driver from a manufacters site or a driver site like usbman |

Hi All, (I'm a new user)
Yes, i've also been through the infuriating 'network cable is unplugged' scenario for several months now. I have been with AOL for 8 yrs and primarily got BB so that I could (actually my teenage daughters could) use the phone at the same time. Been through all the delete/re-install drivers, aol 'helplines' (lol), had BT out to check the line, etc etc. I've given up with that route. So, I have also created the new connection, so access without using aol software is possible. However.... I still get the 'NCIU' message. It is totally intermittent, might last for several hours on-line no probs, might disconnect every couple of minutes or so. Hopefully someone can give an answer, as you all seem knowledgeable bout this. Is it to be a new 'Router', or a new modem? Aol as my ISP is fine, I don't particularly want to change, I just want a BB connection that works! Cheers in anticipation. Mark. |

think you know the answer already mate.....there are enough pointers in this thread.....you need to kick the 105 into touch and get yrsel a router. C |

. Is it to be a new 'Router', or a new modem? If you use a router you don't even need to have any Aol stuff on your PC, you don't need to worry about drivers etc, just connect the router, and in most cases it just a question of selecting Aol as your ISP, enter your screen name and password then set you PC to obtain it's ip automatically. that's it!

This one works with AOL and is under £30 Lol I have already recommended that one in post No 47! Lol I can confirm it works with Aol.

BTW Have you tried Aol Radio, http://music.aol.com/ it really is worth trying if you like music, it's free of adverts and if you log in with your Aol screen name you get CD quality sound. You don't need to use Aol software, just use your normal prefered browser, there are over 300 music stations to choose from with wall to wall music, if you use a free prog such as Audacity you can even save the stuff as MP3 files though you are not supposed too! a lot of usb modems can bring up problems with chipset, specificaly the sis7001 as the power management on this chipset turn power to modem off even when you have no power management in place, it was just a thought on the cause of your disconnection problems but your chipset doesn't have any problems with that. Is there a driver update? If so how do I get it? or do I need a better modem? any advice would be most welcome. |

After numerous disconnections from my AOL broadband internet account and after many attempts and fixes for the problem with AOL tech support and getting nowhere and more frustrated as the weeks passed by, I have finally resolved the problem myself. Having read numerous messages on the AOL bulletin boards it's clear that the 'NETWORK CABLE IS UNPLUGGED' error message is extremely common amongst the members posting there, and many members are suffering consistent interruptions to the service. I always suspected the freely supplied Voyager modem and its driver software but AOL tech support always seem to want to try anything but suggest it might be the modem and its software driver. I believe AOL have a technical problem with it that can't easily be resolved without huge cost implications which is a good reason to try and fanny around and mask the real problem. |

I got AOL broadband (silver) in early September and had no problems until about 3 weeks ago when for a whole day I could hardly get online cause I kept getting the "network cable unplugged" pop-up. And then it worked fine for a week. And then I had 2 days when it wouldn't work... and then it was fine but the past 3 days I've been getting the pop-up again. It was driving me crazy. I contacted AOL and they were useless. After reading this forum and various other things about the bt voyager 105 modem and AOL 9... I uninstalled them both (for the 1787947 thousandth time... seems like all I've been doing the past few days has been installing and uninstalling them) and then just installed the voyager driver and found AOL 8 bizarrely hidden on the AOL broadband/AOL 9 installation disc. Installed AOL 8 and my connection is working fine... infact it's faster than it was before I had all these problems! I'm gonna finish with AOL when my contract is up but for now I'll just put up with AOL 8 because it seemed obvious from speaking to AOL that they aren't gonna do anything for me!

If you just bought a cheapie router (£25) you could remove all Aol software from your PC and use Aol without any logging in or hassle. Most people who use Aol this way are very happy with the service.

I bought the one mentioned in here from ebuyer and it was faulty! So it's being sent back.
AOL 8 is a good quick (free) fix for the "network cable is unplugged" problem. |

Hi, your problems appear almost identical to mine, so I am obviously looking towards ditching the free aol /BT modum, and getting a router. Can you confirm you are still having success with your new set up. And how much is such a router, and where best to buy at a good price??? chow. john. Yes my setup is still working problem free and has been for 12 months now other than a fault on the BT line which was promptly fixed by BT via AOL support. Amazon are fast and reliable and offer the Netgear router at a price of around £65. Regards, C |

Hi, at a special price of £64.95 inc a free Wireless adaptor, but they put the price up the day after! FWIW I would recommend Amazon everytime without hesitation, they offer an excellent service.

Hi Guys.
Well, 'The Scream' it aint. Check out the time i'm posting this at... Well, got myself the netgear DG834GT, found I didn't have an ethernet port on the back of my PC (only 2 yrs old) so went back (PC World) and got talked into buying a new PC... just to be sure y'know...!! Set up new PC, fine, no probs, but the router... well, it just won't make a connection to the net. It flashes yellow occasionally, but not long enough to make a connection. So, in desperation, I've connected the 105 back up, and it works, but still have got the NCIU ballon now and again. Whats going on? |

Hi Guys. You need to provide a little more detail on what you have done. The Netgear setup instructions are fairly straightforward to follow, which LED is flashing amber (Internet or LAN).....see attached thumbnail. Have you logged into the router and used the Setup Wizard to automatically configure your connection. Last edited by cyberspacecowboy; 14-December-2005 at 17:38. |

Hi Cyberspacecowboy,
I haven't had any more time today to look at it again, thought I would get the Norton and Office set up first anyway as they are potentially more important. I've also been on aol live help, who have emailed me 7 pages of step by step set up instructions... haven't gone through them yet, but seems more thorough than the small piece of paper included with the router. Thanks for the thumbnail, although I can't read that small!! lol The light that flashes amber intermittently is directly (on left) next to the number 1, it's an i that looks like it standing in a puddle. The next symbol (on left) is the lollipop that signifies wireless connectivity. This is solid green. I wasn't able to configure the router as it didn't connect to the www. I'm a bit confused really, due to the lack of detail in the instructions, as to whether the router needs 'installing' first like as in drivers etc, or whether it gets plugged in first and finds it's own way. The instructions seemed to suggest plug it into the phone socket first, and thats what I did. Hopefully I will get time to have another go tomorrow. Cheers, |
