Just been speaking with someone at Tesco broadband and he told me (unofficially) that they are currently doing work to double broadband speeds in line with AOL and BT's recent increases i.e. the 512KBs service will become 1MB :-)

If that is true that will be absolutely great
Just wounder how long it would take for everyone to be upgraded and hopefully the network will cope. Do you know if there will be a price increase if this happens?

I can't see Tesco increasing the speed "just like that" (Tommy Cooper style). They might be planning to add a 1mb service.
Whilst BT can increase speeds at the same price point I can't see Tesco being able to do it. I think BT's position in the ADSL market must count as a monopoly and they are abusing it. I can't see BT giving Tesco a good enough deal to up the speed. |

I hope I'm not wrong but the guy I was speaking to implied that the increase will be Free of Charge.

Downstream 172 Kbps (21.5 KB/sec) 185 Kbps (inc. overheads) mine is a bit slower than usual but not that much slower, even considering the VP at the exchange is on red, ouch! Thing about speed upgrade is that as I live a fair bit away from the exchange i can get 512 but may / may not be able to get 1mb

Sad! When your paying for 512kb
I was hoping they would get better being such a large company. I am a novice & just did not know who to sign up with. Within my means. Just thought comp was playing up again! As I do have problems. Then remembered the ADSL test. So; Unhappy.

have you checked what the status of your exchange is and how far you are away from the exchange?
Mine has been fine so far with ,as i said, lowest being 420 downstream and that is when our exchange vp is on red and usually it is about 520+ |

im not exactly the most technical person but i know / picked up a bit of knowledge lol.
The speed maybe because you are a certain distance form the exchange your connected to...a long way from it and so cannot get speeds of 512, this would be the same from all providors as they would still supply it from the same exchange and you would not be able to get better speeds. Also it could be due to the Virtual Path at the exchange being on red or orange, try http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/ and type in the name of your exchange and it will come up with VP at the top and cant remember what the other one is at the bottom. If the VP is not green (the cirlce) that could be why. if i am wrong on this anyone is free to correct me Last edited by chris87; 20-February-2005 at 17:01. |

This slow speed must be down to tesco then, according to this below I should receive 512 no problem.
Broadband Availability Checker Summary BT ADSL BT SDSL LLU xDSL Cable Wireless Locality Check again BT ADSL broadband availability You are connected to the Aberdare (SWAA) telephone exchange. Your exchange is enabled for ADSL! There is limited capacity at your exchange for further ADSL connections. Capacity is due to be increased on 23/02/2005 The following level of service is available at your location: You can receive 2Mbps ADSL You can receive 1Mbps ADSL You can receive 512Kbps ADSL You can receive 256Kbps ADSL |

It means exactly what its says the Virtual paths are almost full and you will get a slow down during busy times and the eta for BT to fix is 23rd Feb.
At busy times, your ADSL connection may operate at a reduced speed, although not all customers on your exchange may be affected. The ETA fix time is: 23 Feb 05 If your speed does not improve then check with tesco to see if there is a problem. Use Adsl Guide's speed test page to check your speed. Speed Test Your speed should look something like this for 512/256 Downstream 479 Kbps (59.9 KB/sec) 517 Kbps (inc. overheads) Upstream 252 Kbps (31.5 KB/sec) 272 Kbps (inc. overheads) . |

I've just come accross this forum and read this post with interest. I'm on Tesco at the moment and am fed up with a 512K connection which is rapidly becomming the new dial up. Does anyone have any more info on Tesco increasing the speed of its broadband service? I notice this thread was started back in Feb. I have emailed Tesco to ask but nothing back. As per usual.

Looking at all the negative postings on here and elsewhere I suspect that Tesco are not looking at 1Mb at the moment -they're probably running flat-out trying to fix all the problems with 512!
Although I wouldn't be surprised if they don't offer it in future considering that AOL are starting offer cheap uncapped products. |

yep, agree that 512 problems need to be sorted out, although i am one of the lucky ones who have never had a problem with Tesco broadband and more often than not get very good speeds. I'm just starting to get itchy feet with many other ISP's starting to up their speeds. I'm sure i'm not the only one on Tesco broadband who feels like they are getting left behind.......

I will certainly be looking to get out shortly if Tesco do not come up with 1mb, however as has been stated they need to fix the 512 first.

I'd ring Tesco or email them the results and ask them to register a fault. Your connection shouldn't be that slow.

All it said was that the 1MB would be launched in the summer - that was it. I doubt that 512 customers will be upgraded to 1Mb, I think that it's case of people would need to regrade.
I wouldnt be surprised if there was a pricedrop to keep it in line with other Datastream providers |

Just checked the tesco e-mail today and i found the 'broadband newsletter' saying about it having no limits unlike a lot of other providors and that 1mb is coming in the summer.

I got a tesco newsletter as well, and it did say A 1MB service is coming in the summer. But what is still unclear is its cost, it dont say if there will be an increase in current charge.
But i think it will be unlimited becasue the newsletter gives loads of stats about conusmer downloading. I think tesco has ironed out alot of the problems with the 512kbps, i used to get cut off quite alot and it seems to have stopped, but i still somtimes get a windtunnel noise when making a phonecall. Does anyone eles still get thin problem? |
