Default Thieving Magpie

We have a pair of magpies patrolling our garden.

After the hailstones and snow on the ground late this afternoon we saw one of the pair hard at work around some newly planted rose bushes.

The fact that these 200mm labels were buried deep in the soil did not deter this criminal from pulling them from the ground. The blighter was practising whether or not he could take off with the label in this beak.

The labels were rescued and brought into the house for safety

Please note the highly scented range of roses which with the curry plants should mask the smell of our neighbour's compost tip

I'll pop the picky on as an attachment just to make sure you can see it too

BTW the labels would increase the magpie's take off weight by 12 grammes.

Nasty piece of work the old Magpie, shot hundreds over the years

they will attack any other birds on thier patch, killing them if possible, they attack fledglings in the nest tear them appart and eat them, thats if they are hungry if not just tear them appart You can say goodbye to all the songbirds
that visit your garden when the Magpie takes up residence.

Ask anybody country bred his opinion on Magpie,s then stand well back,
