New to this networking business and need security advice.
Just got a Voyager 2091 broadband router. It's got a web interface for managing it. Great, it's all configured and working wirelessly and via ethernet. Connected to the internet as expected. What I didn't expect however was when I typed my internet IP into my browser, the router served its web interface across the net ??? Is this generally what router's are supposed to do? The reason I did this was I run an Apache server on one of my PCs and was trying to get the port forwarding to work to allow the PC to continue to function as a web server responding to port 80 requests. Apparently it doesn't matter what configurations I change, I keep getting the router's homepage. |

Hiya.
The default logins are..... User ID = Admin and password = Password The web interface address is.... http://192.168.1.1/ If the above login data does not work, the Router may still have the ex-users password retained, etc. Possibly resetting the Router back to Factory settings will allow you to use the default login data. On the rear of the Router there should be a small pinhole, now with the Router turned ON, insert a straightened out paperclip into the hole and when all the lights light up, remove the paperclip and wait a few minutes for the Router to reset. Then try the default Password, etc.

Hiya.
Thanks for that. ![]() Well thats another option the poster can try. All the ones I have read about use the data I posted, why they change them is beyond me, maybe its a BT thing to confuse the issue.

Is everyone referring to unlocked 2091s here?

The username and password for http://192.168.1.1 is admin and admin
This is the same for the locked and unlocked versions. Now, you can, and indeed, should disable web access for your modem. But you also need to bear in mind that the 2091 doesn't have an internal loopback, so you won't be able to view your web server unless you go via a proxy server. I found this on the puzbie site, though I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link. |

We now have a V220 Voyager (Repalce linksys today that blew up)and get the same thing...
Let me explain what is happening for the people that don't run web servers. If we type www.google.com we get google. If we type a www. address for a website that exists on our web server we get the routers interface. However if some from outside types the www. address for a website that exists on our web server they get the website. It's as if the routing table for the router is in reverse. Oh and port forwarding is right and only works for the outsider coming in. This makes it very unfriendly for people wanting to develope their websites internally as they cannot view them properly. I'll post when I fix it. |

I ran a private web server a few years ago and what you are saying is correct. You cannot view the webpage/s from the Server PC, internally.
From memory, you have to add the website/s to the Hosts file in C\Windows\system32\drivers\etc << Folder and point it back to the PC to view the webpage/s from your Server PC. EG. Code:
192.168.0.2 www.mysite.co.uk Code:
127.0.0.1 www.mysite.co.uk

192.168.1.1 is not an external IP address, its an internal one, same as 127.0.0.1, anyone typing these IPs into the browser wont see your info they see their own, or nothing.
Thinking about it, if every router has the same IP how could they see yours lol, its perfectly safe, unless ofc its wireless, you leave it unsecured, in which case anyone who can connect to your wireless can mess with your settings |
