Over the past couple of years i have accumlated a vast amount of crap on my Hdd. Im trying to clear out exactly what i dont want however.
There are some progs that i still use from time to time i.e. Nokia suite but i dont want them to load when i re-boot. If i knock them out at startup in Windows defender or MSCONFIG will i loose them all together or can i simpily start them again when required. My boot times are really long and there are far too many icons at the bottom right of my screen. Cheers in advance |

Hiya.
I use Msconfig/Startup to stop most unwanted programs loading at bootup. Just untick the ones you want to stop, click Apply and OK out, reboot when asked, if needed. Note. On a very few odd occasions, the entry may re-enable itself, via the program concerned, This can usually be solved by the settings/options in the program, by unticking an option such as Start with Windows, etc. EDIT. Oops! forgot to say, you can re-enable them when required.

Cheers,
i just did not want my Computer to have a big strop and refuse to boot as it is looking for the progs. Obviously ill leave the MS and Anti vir stuff alone. I suppose stuff like Skype i can just click on the Exe when i want to use it ? Do you think it will effect Steam ( HL2 e.t.c.) ? Cheers Johnny |

Yes, software like Sktype you will beable to just double-click the icon and it should open the tray icon on load.
If you have any problems, you could always run msconfig again and re-enable the service which has caused the problem by reticking the box next to it. However, make sure you do not disable any antivirus/firewall services (I know they normally take the longest to load!), since this could open your computer up to Internet risks. |

Hiya.
That only usually happens when you have moved/deleted a program. Most of mine are disabled, I cant see the point of loading several related options for the same program at bootup, when I rarely use them. I do the same as you mentioned about Skype, I fire up any program/s manually as needed. I cant help you with the Steam entry, I have never used it, so cannot say what affect it would have. Mind you, you could always try it, lol and see if it does anything, if it does, just re-enable the entry again. In fact, I have just disabled about 5 entries for programs that I havent used for months.

If you like, post a HijackThis! logfile and I'll tell you what's safe to remove.

I use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. It allows you to disable and re-enable all those programs that run at startup, whether they are in your Start up folder or under the various registry keys.
Use Google to identify what the programs are and whether they are needed. There are various sites that tell you, one such site is Pacman's Portal. Some you might only need once in a blue moon. You can put them under a shortcut on the Start menu or desktop so that you only load them when needed. |

This is only a fleeting visit and I'll analyse your logfile later but a quick glance reveals McAfee and Norton running. If this is two AV or two firewalls, decide which one you want to keep and uninstall the other.
There are quite a few items that we can disable but there may be a few programs that you don't use in there. Have a look at your Add/Remove Programs applet and uninstall anything yoou don't need. See you in a little while.

Cheers Zero,
Just off to work myself so no rush. I use the Norton AV as it came in the utilities bundle with Ghost. I use the Mcaffe for firewall but i have uninstalled their virus scanner as it caused a majour conflict. Catch you later and thanks so far. |

Sorry about that Buckster, I got myself a dose of 'flu.
These are a few that stick out but you really need to assess whether or not you want things like Desktop Sidebar, Google Toolbar and all the Norton crud running. You may also want to take another look at your McAfee installation. I think you have a few more components to remove yet. If something no longer functions in the way you like after removing these entries, HijackThis! creates backups so it's simply a matter of replacing the affected deleted entries. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe OO4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe 04 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Global Startup: YO_ZQ-P20H Synchronization Software.lnk = C:\Program Files\SHARP\YO_ZQ-P20H\sync.exe Cheers |

Go ahead and fix them. HijackThis! automatically creates backups so if you do hit any problems, you can easily reverse what you did.
