Default Earth set for Mars close encounter

Mars will make its closest approach to Earth for almost 60,000 years on Wednesday. Dr Robin Catchpole, senior astronomer at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London, explains how to witness the event.

Every 15 to 17 years, this happens when Mars is closest to the Sun.

On 27 August this year they will pass at a distance of 55,760,000 km or 0.3727 AU (1 AU is the distance of the Earth from the Sun), closer than any time during the last 60,000 years.

Watch it! Just 'cause I wasn't worried about the planet being demolished by a collision with Mars isn't a reason to charge a round of milky bars to my account

Mrs W/L was watching a programme on volcanos last night. I'm trembling at the thought we might be made extinct by a major volcanic eruption.

A true tale...
In a PSE lesson at school just before I retired about 3 yrs ago I had to sit in on a lesson given to my form (mixed 14yr olds) by the school nurse on contraception, some of the little charmers had the idea that Mars bar wrappers were a good emergency contraceptive device, presumably wrapped around the phallus? one lad thinking he was Bernard Manning said " it would be an advantage to me if the chocolate bar was still in the wrapper!" great hilarity all round, and a girl sat just behind him said "dont you believe him" order was quickly restored and both miscreants sent out of the room.

Further to school nurses....the previous incumbent of the post held by the Mars bar nurse, said in the staff room one day that they had to stop using two fingers to role a condom on to show how to apply the item, as some kids were thick enough (brain wise!) to actually use the finger method as the correct procedure.
They were issued with substantial plastic organs on stands which were very lifelike.
It was not unusual to be asked by some wag "please sir, will nurse be bringing richard with her?" when the PSE lesson included sex instruction.
Ha happy days.

If i remember corectly our adventures into sex education involved a film from america about getting black heads n zits an developing pubic hair needless to say by the time we were shown the film 99% of the class had both

Its no wonder kids are still getting pregnant when no one it seems has the bottle to teach sex ed properly in an adult and factual way to todays teens....
