Hi.
I am having some difficulties connecting wirelessly to my Tiscali broadband service through my WGT624 Wireless Router and wondered if anyone could help? I can connect OK if I connect directly into my computer using the speedtouch USB modem provided. Ie ethernet connection from the wall socket to the modem, then connected to my computer via a USB cable. No problems. However, if I want wireless then it is giving me some grief! I have consulted Tiscali's notes on using netgear products and they say to ensure that my router is an adsl router (which I am pretty sure it is). Originally what I tried to do was connect my netgear router directly to the wall connection via ethernet and try and pick up the signal via my wireless PCI card in my PC. I went to the 'view available wireless networks' in the Networks settings and it said NETGEAR full signal. I connected and a bubble popped up to say I was connected full strength. However... no Internet. I have since noticed that this actually does this even if the netgear router isn't connected to the internet at all, and is just switched on. However this does tell me that the router and signal are both working. I have wired the netgear router straight into my computer (without internet access) and logged into the router directly. I have input all the information that I was given in an email by Tiscali and it still wont connect. I have used the following guide: http://uk-tiscali.custhelp.com/cgi-b...hp?p_faqid=352 Point number 4: I don't get this green light, or indeed any light at all. Can anyone suggest why this is? Thanks if anyone can help - I am tearing my hair out over this one - Before in my previous house it was simply plug and play (however was connected to a telewest modem) Thanks Andrew |

Hi andrewsco.
Welcome to The Scream! ![]() That article only covers Netgear Modem/Router combo's. From a quick search on that Router, it is a Router only, not a Modem/Router combination, which means you need a compatible Modem connected to the Router for it to work. Looking at the rear of the Router, I can only see 5 RJ45 ports and a Power socket, there are no RJ11 ports for the ADSL line. The Modem you require would have to have an Ethernet/RJ45 outlet port, not USB, to connect to the Router. Did you get a Manual for the Router, it should tell you in there what is required. These come in paper booklets or PDF format and the latter are usually on the supplied CD for the Router. Here is the one I found if it is of any help. http://support.digidave.co.uk/index....s&_m=get&_i=22 Right click on the above link and select Save Target As.. to start the download. Alternately, it might be better to purchase a Modem/Router combo, which will eliminate your problem and keep all the hardware in one unit rather than two. Netgear do a series of Modem/Router combo units, with or without wireless, etc.

Hi.
Sorry - my description was bad. That is actually what I am doing. I have the adsl filter that Tiscali provided into the wall, the RJ11 cable then from the filter to my WGT624 router. That is what I meant to get across. The point is I am not getting the internet sign that you say. Should the Netgear WGT624 Router be compatible with ADSL? I have heard that is is but if someone knows otherwise can you let me know? Thanks - PS see reply below as post above changed.... Last edited by andrewsco; 29-January-2007 at 15:16. |

Hi,
Thanks for the above post. I understand that word for word - very well put. So basically I need a new wireless router really (bit annoying as that's another £60 down the pan) but that said I can always sell my other router as it is in good condition. Can you suggest a decent router that has a RJ11 connection and will work with my ADSL setup? Thanks for the help Andrew |

Hiya.
Damn, I am confused with the posts above now, lol. You could have left your post in place Centaur, it would have stopped any more confusion. Anyway, here is one I quickly found that is similar to yours, but has the modem inbuilt. Check the specs lower down the page and compare them to your present one. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/78906 I cant understand how you connected the RJ11 to the Router, it hasnt got an RJ11 port on it and the RJ11, although similar to the RJ45, is more of a square plug, the RJ45 is oblong. unless you have some form of adapter or an RJ45 faceplate, etc. Either way, it will not work without the Ethernet output ported Modem, its just a 4 way wireless/ethernet switch.

Well... The RJ11 plug fits into an ethernet port - maybe its not supposed to, but it does. The same can't be said of ethernet into RJ11 port though.

Hiya.
Yes it does, lol, although it isnt really meant to fit into that type of port. The RJ11 has only 2 contacts, whereas the RJ45 has 8. No worries anyway, now you know why you cannot make a connection. PS. You could also search Ebay for a cheaper/secondhand Netgear. http://www.ebay.co.uk/

Hiya
If you do a Google search for Setup guides for Belkin routers, that should get you started. Or if you include the Router model number in the search, that will help as well. Or if you post back the model number of the Belkin in full, we may be able to find the user manual, which will have the setup guide included. EG. F5D7050 v4, etc.

Most belkins have a setup wizard, If you run this and accept the defaults except for the following (for most uk ISPs)
connection=pppoa, encapsulation = vcMux, VCC(vpi=0, vci=38), authenticiation =chap(with your isp supplied username & password) For the WGT624, dont go out and buy a new wireless/dsl router. Look for a dsl modem with ethernet router. They usually come with 1 or 4 ports and should be a lot cheaper. You should be able to get one of these from ebay etc and just plug the netgear into it. |

The only slight complication that might arise with having a dsl device and seperate router is if the UPNP doesn't work properly. If both devices support it, (most stuff sold now should), you shouldn't have a problem. However, if you DO have a problem it might be difficult to locate the source.
I've got an old Creative Labs broadband router which doesn't support upnp connected to a wireless router which does. Both devices use Network Address Translation, (NAT), and I have to remember to enter forwarding rules for any games/torrent programmes, etc. I use into the broadband router. It's pretty straightforward but I have to forward them to the IP address of the PC, NOT the wireless router. Once it's setup it works fine though and it only has to be done once. |

Put the wireless router in the DMZ of the first router, then you need only configure the NAT on the wireless router.
Whether you should have upnp enabled is questionable, you lose the advantage of having a hardware firewall if you allow software running on you PC to punch holes in it. Much better to manually configure for the applications that you want to allow in. |

Agreed. I think this illustrates part of the problem with computing in general... that the whole thing is sold on the basis that everything is easy to use and fits together without a hitch. That's often not the case. My old creative labs thingy doesn't do upnp anyway so that solves that problem
![]() If andrewsco, (or anyone else for that matter), has any problems getting anything going he may be better off just getting an adsl moden with wireless built-in. Y'know.. life's too short and all that! |
