Trading Standards & Consumer Protection Unit
My local London Borough provides this service, which I have used in relation to my ISP woes and they have been extremely helpful and given me advice which allowed me to make an informed decision when discussing my woes with my ISP.
It might be worth browsing the net to see if you have a similar service available to you.
Consumer Direct is a telephone and online consumer advice service, which is supported by local authorities in London and by the Department of Trade and Industry. It provides clear, practical consumer advice to help consumers sort out problems and disagreements with suppliers of goods or services. From overcharging to faulty goods, and dodgy workmanship to reporting dishonest traders and scams, Consumer Directs' trained advisers are ready to offer individual solutions for individual problems.
Consumer Direct works in partnership with Local Authority Trading Standards Advice Services and Consumer Support Networks, providing first level advice and information on a wide range of consumer problems.
More complex problems or complaints requiring further investigation or assistance are referred by Consumer Direct to the Investigations Team within Newham’s Trading Standards Service. This team holds the Community Legal Service Quality Mark for Consumer and General Contract Law to the General Help and Case Work Standard.
