Default AVG 7.5 removal

Hi All, My friend bought and reinstalled HP home, as his version was not seen as genuine (it was, but he has more money than sense)
Since doing this, on start up ,he gets a box from avg saying "the code we sent you by email has not been entered correctly".It was the free version of avg 7.5 (no code needed) that was previously downloaded and installed.OK I thought lets delete and reinstall. In add/remove it says it deleted it but doesn't.In programs menu avg uninstall won't delete it either, access to a particular file denied.Went into windows explorer to delete avg and access was denied as well (different file, this was a .dll file) So can't delete avg 7.5 free, anyone know why or experienced this situation. All replys gratefully received.

Hiya.

Is AVG still running by any chance, sometimes it wont uninstall if it is or has a fault, which it sounds like.

Open Msconfig and untick the AVG entry in the Startup tab, DONT reboot when asked.

Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc OK it.

Look for the 3 AVG entries and Stop them, set them to Disable, OK out.

Now reboot and try to uninstall, unless you have already trashed the files, lol.

I had a similar thing happen the other day concerning the reg code and had to uninstall it and install it again. I think it was an update that caused the problem, but not 100% sure.

Have you tried re-installing AVG 7.5 over the top of the existing installation. It should then replace any corrupted files. Then after re-installation try to delete it again using add/ remove.

It has worked for me with other software packages that have given me problems.

Keith, 'fraid your idea didn't work either.
When I downloaded it again and run setup, I get the message " your registration code is not recognised, please copy and paste from the email we sent you". Never got any email cos it,s the free version I downloaded and the free reg. code is already in the box prior to running the prog.
Aw' well I'll keep trying.

You do need to enter a registration code that they send in an email - even with the free version.

Hiya.

It seems a few people have this problem and is mainly from upgrading windows, etc, but being Free, there is no official Grisoft support for it, only volunteers on their Forum.

In your first post, you said you tried to delete AVG in Win Explorer, but certain files prevented it, that is because AVG is still running services. I assume you mean delete the Grisoft folder in Program Files ?

If you do as I said in my previous post, untick AVG in Msconfig and Stop and Disable the 3 entries in Service.msc, after a reboot, the folder should be deletable. Send it to the Recycle bin, just in case you have to retrieve it.

Reboot again and try to install AVG fresh.

If that fails, it may mean a Registry clean of all AVG/Grisoft entries.

JR, I did disable the 3 things you specified, but i still could not uninstall or reinstall. Yes I was referring to the Grisoft folder.
BJ, i downloaded and installed AVG free on my own computer and NO email was sent to me!On installation the key was automatically inserted in the box, something like ?????free277272888xxxxx.
'Cos my friend has new xp disk, and nothing worth saving on his internal hard drive, methinks a format and reinstall will be the path to tread.
Thanks all for your input.

If you've ever installed AVG before (and got the key via email) it will have stored the registration key in the Windows Registry, so on reinstalling it will just put it in the box for you; which sounds like what happens on your computer.

However, for a new install on a new computer (i.e. the situation your mate's in) you'd have to go through the registration process whereby they send you the key through email.

Never had to enter a key for AVG at all, well I did in the early days but haven't had to do it at all in the last 3 years that I have been using it on any PC.

My mistake - just had a look at the AVG site and found this:
You do not need to register to get AVG Free Edition license number. The license number is predefined in each AVG Free Edition installation package.
I was going on the way it used to work.

Have you checked the FAQ on installing/uninstalling on their site? Link: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5/lng/us.../nid/5732#5458

A bit drastic I know, but no probs now.

Talking Re: AVG 7.5 removal

OK right after I talked to yoi, I talked to the 'Geeks' @ best Buuty. I just bought the Macafee Virus scan + , @Bestbut, they said bring it in and we'll have a look. Brought it in and they did the same thing I did, MSconfig and Add/Delete.

When I first went in to the putter, I first tried to delete all the EXE. files and that didnt work. The tried to delete all at the same time, that didnt work, one at a time and that didnt work. So the Geek says, "Sounds weird, but if you go in and delete 3-5 files at a time, it sometimes works. IT DID!!!

Damnest thing, I was able to delete all the files except one. I retried the disk in my E: drive and the same message from Macafee came up. This message lead right to Add/Delete. Now it deleted the last file. PROBLEM FIXED, Macafee in and AVG out!

Wonder if these difficult uninstalls are defensive to prevent unauthorised control of the system the program is designed to protect?

Bearing this possibility in mind it would seem imperative to follow installation and uninstall instructions precisely otherwise there is a possibility of serious problems arising.

Maybe I will be the first to report a failed uninstall from following AVG instructions to the letter

The way I normally do this (I've cured it for several people) is do the msconfig and services.msc thing, then use Regedit. I search for all instances of Grisoft and AVG and delete them from the registry. Reboot, and AVG is no longer running or linked. Then the folder and files can be deleted with no problems.

Boot Windows into Safe Mode (press F8 at boot up), one in safe mode, go into control panel, add & remove, and remove AVG. Reboot Windows normally and then install AVG 8; it just worked for me!

Thumbs up Re: AVG 7.5 removal

Wow... So I have had some serious issues getting rid of AVG 7.5 also. Just like you I had tried deleting all the files from the program file at once and one at a time to no avail. So after reading this I tried what you said about deleting 3-5 at a time and it WORKED. I can't even remotely see the logic so I appreciate that you took the time to update us. Thanks!

I cannot get rid of this AVG 7.5. I have tried removing it under the Add/Remove-didn't work. I have tried upgrading to 8.0 and using the uninstall-didn't work. I went to Search on my hard drive and tried deleting them-didn't work. I went to run msconfig and run serices.msc to see if it was actually running in the background-it wasn't. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Hi krissyinlv.

Welcome to The Scream!

After some quick research, it is said, that using Add/Remove Programs to uninstall AVG, leaves behind a glut of AVG files on the system.

Apparently the correct way to uninstall AVG, is to run the setup file that you used to install it in the first place.

By doing that, you are confronted with 3 options....

Add/Remove Components.

Repair.

Uninstall.

If you havent got the installer anymore, but know the version of AVG you have on the PC/Laptop, you should be able to download that Setup file again and run it to uninstall AVG correctly. This is assuming you havent already trashed any of the files, lol.

Below is the link to AVG Free Edition 7.5.524, at a hefty 36.56MB.

On the right of that page are the older versions, going back to AVG Free Edition 7.0.298

http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/4029/

Maybe this will solve yours and other peoples problems with the Uninstallation.

It may be a Security thing to prevent Virus's etc, messing about with AVG, but to me its a bit OTT for the end user.

I went to the Bluehippo link and copy and pasted the link they had, but went to a search engine page instead. I have gone to the AVG Website and tried to download the program so I can uninstall it that way, but it comes up as an error, showing a program with the extension that windows doesn't recognize.

Hiya.

I have just confirmed the link and it works OK for me.

Just click on the link I provided, then click on the AVG version you have, on the righthand side menu, if needed. Once you have done that, the page will refresh and the download link will be at the top of the righthand side menu, next to the GREEN arrow, which says.... Download This Version

Just click that link and it will open another page and the download should auto start. If it doesnt, there is a manual link on that page just to the right of the GREEN arrow on the left, which says....

If not then click here

Dont try and copy/paste the links, they wont work that way, you need to click on the links in sequence until the download starts.

I have the same problem as mentioned above... When ever I try to download a .exe file like avg remover, or any other .exe file off the net, I get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage,
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address. "

I am connected to the net, must of done something to my other security settings, any ideas?

Thanks

Some time since a post here but I have just had annoying issues deleting AVG 7.5 Free Edition from my Windows 98 PC even with help from AVG who do not support ’98 so could not upgrade.

Ctrl panel-Add/Delete did not delete enough files/folders to stop AVG interrupting my PC prog’s.

All remaining files/folders found manually have been deleted except those (about 100) found in registry so far which I am not sure/confident about deleting without the fear of losing some or all functionality of my other software.

Myuninstaller v1.71 unable to work as it could not find gdiplus.dll file.

Any help/info/comment would be much appreciated.
