Default BT Home Hub as a router...

Hello,

I would really appreciate some input on this problem as I'm about to give up!

I have inherited a BT HH (version 1.0 I believe, it's black) that I would like to use as a router (supplying a wireless laptop and a desktop via an ethernet cable) for a virgin media broadband connection.

I have followed a set of instructions to clear the BT software and believe the HH is now back to its original speedtouch router state. I used the following instructions:

http://www.josephn.net/unlocking_bt_home_hub

In theory I should now be able to connect the RJ45 from my virgin modem into one of the 2 ethernet ports on the HH and then connect the desktop to the HH with another RJ45, however this doesn't work. I have also tried (with no avail) converting the RJ45 from the modem into a RJ11 so I could connect into the HH port labelled 'broadband in'.

I think that my problem is in configuring the HH to act as a router for my virgin modem. Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance

Thom

hi Thomas

here is the same problem that someone else had so read the thread and give it a go !!

I have also read the link that you posted about unlocking the HH but it states that you can only use it as a wired router.
If you use some of the unlocking firmware posted on this forum you can use it as a wireless router!!!
Worth a try !!!

Hello,

Many thanks for your reply, I got so confused with various posts that I didn't realise how relevant that thread was!

I have followed Austin_KW's instructions and all is good, it's very slow but I think that's just Virgin's fault!

One section I would appreciate explaining...I've changed the homehub IP addresses but didn't understand the following section:

'You will want to add a hub address on this new .100.0 subnet.'

Any ideas?

Many thanks

@ thomas

I have no idea about your subnet question but I suggest you PM Austin_KW and get the ans from him as he's the one who replied to that thread and also post the ans on the actual thread itself so that other ppl can be clear about that statement of his ...

On it being slow I do not think that it could be Virgin's fault as they usually give fiber optic. Are you on ADSL with them ?

good luck ....

Adding/changing the hub's address is just so you can manage the hub when it is on your home network.

If your home network is x.y.z.* then you want the hub to have an address on the x.y.z network. Then you can change wireless settings etc just by going to this new address.

Otherwise you have to manually configure your PC to have a static 192.168.1.* address every-time you want to change something on the hub. (something I have to do regularly because the twit who lives next door keeps putting his wireless on the same channel as mine)

hey guys, many thanks for your replies.

One final question (I hope)...I'm having trouble connecting my flatmates mac book to the HH via wireless. The mac recognises the router and can connect to it but the HH doesn't appear to be transmitting any internet access - I have confirmed via the SpeedTouch config pages that wireless access is turned on.

As the HH is working through my PC with an ethernet I guess I just need to configure something? jin799 mentioned that the instructions I followed only permitted wired connection with the HH and I therefore need wireless firmware...any idea where I can get this and what I'd then do with it!?

Cheers

Thom

Hi thomas

If you're able to get the mac to connect to the HH then maybe the wireless in the HH works.
Maybe you delete all the wireless settings for HH then reboot the mac and then see what happens when you try to make a fresh connection with the HH.

The other firmware I was talking about in this forum is
But be careful and read properly and then choose the firmware which is for the HH as there is also stuff on there about the BT Business Hub

see how you get on and post back .
