I use Chrome and that alerts when pop-ups appear, then you have the choice whether to allow them or not - sometimes you have to allow, in order to see a correct page, but it's pretty much commonsense - which, I admit, doesn't always happen when kids use my computer! But I've never personally had a pop-up infect my machine when using Chrome, while I've been using it. Highly recommended! |

That's a scareware trojan infection. Very often you have no virus at all. I find something like Superantispyware is brilliant for getting rid of these. They are just trying to scare you into parting with your money just to get rid of the message. There are however very real ones which can be evil. My latest thoughts are that if you have your MSN/Live messenger application open at the time you visit facebook and play "certain" games then the hidden coding sends messages/adverts to all your contacts. My daughters and son-in-laws laptops are clean yet still send out ad's. Both at different houses to mine (married but not to each other) They each go on facebook everyday. I go on often but don't play the games and have an account in my messenger contacts list that would receive anything "bulk mailed" and show if it was happening.

Persuaded by my niece to join Facebook - she seems addicted and anxious to maximise the number of her "friends".
I have put on my profile page - "Risk of identity theft - no personal details provided" It's a real way to make friends!!!! ![]() Seems that whatever security measures you put on your computer someone with evil intent will try to get through them. Some pop ups can be quite aggressive and defeat protection of some internet protection suites or other settings. |

I put very few personal details on Facebook and never add anyone I don't know. I suppose in these days when so much information is available online, it is easy enough for someone to get hold of personal details about you. But I don't want to hand it to someone on a plate!

Do you use Avast, Twinkle? They pushed a bad update a couple of hours ago and were flagging numerous sites (including Google) as containing malware. If you do use it and don't update automatically try disabling the web shield for a few minutes, download the latest definitions with the fix, and all should be Ok again. Worked for me
