I wonder if we may be seeing an improvement in the value of local elections.
It appears that a number candidates in various parts of the country had put themselves forward without an allegiance to any political party. Their stated aim is to ignore 'a national agenda' and put the interests of their town/city as their interest. In addition the election of two Mayors, without political baggage is a small step, maybe to true democracy at a local level. Maybe this is a pipe dream, and it will always require a 'party' background to get anything done. I found in the States, Sheriffs were very attentive to local problems and held regular meetings, Sheriffs are of course elected. Not like our ivory tower Chief Constables, tied to the whims of their political masters. A tiny, tiny, step maybe, but it may rekindle the interests of voters, shaking them out of their local election apathy. I do hope so. |

true navan.
I've always thought that the "party politics" has been a hinderence to democracy. I mean wht the hell can't a tory say that a New labour idea is good or that the polices in this area or that area are working. Or vice vesa of course. this is EXACTLY why we saw such a low turnout in the locals on Thrusday. People ar esick of the petty bickering. |
