Has anyone else recently moved up to Tiscali Broadband and getting the same problems as I am having ? .
Disconected between 55 and 60 mins every time I am on line, the site you were surfin is no longer there when you re-connect, so you have to re-login to that site, and then try to remember where you were before you were cut off . Periods of slow down loads/uploads ( sometime even slower that the standard connection at times), and most of all not being able to connect at all ?. I emailed Tiscal with these problems on Wednesday of last week, I also told them that I had had enough, and if things did not improve I would move to another service provider. They responded to my mail within 14 hours ( normaly 2 days), full of appologies, sorry the server was being upgraded, they have a new pipe ( what ever that is) and things will improve. As to the slow downs the answer given was too many people on line, Connection problems have also now been resolved. What a load of rubbish. I went on line this evening at 19.00hrs, it is now 00.15 hrs, I have been cut off 4 times, I have spent 45 mins trying to get on line (8 times my little tv screens tell me I am on line, but can not connect to server) but at least I seem to be getting wher I want to go quickly. So is it just me, or do Tiscali still have problems

They seem to still have severe problems.
One minute fine - next slow again. However, I don't seem to get any disconnects. There seem to be issues both with Tiscali itself and with BT who are providing the wholesale service - so it's a bit confusing sometimes what to do about it.

Merlin. Sorry, I have only just seen this thread!
I too have been having problem eg last Friday thro' Sunday we had long periods where we could generally FTP, email but could NOT reach a web page (not even Tiscali's front page!). At times everything would stop. I don't think we were disconnected (I have a modem/router and the connect light was constant but I've not checked the logs at Tiscali). I tried to phone them many times but did not get thro'. We had similar problems early last week and when I emailed them I too got the server, pipe etc response. I was not too enamoured with their staff as one did not know what to do when I said that I was running Win XP and a modem/router! However it has been fine yesterday and today.

Hi Gem
I finnally got through to a Tiscali tech man today. who on explaining my problem asked me to check my connection settings. When I told him my dial up number, he informed me it was incorrect ( This is the number I was sent when I signed up). He Told me to delete it and relace it with 0,38 Where he got this number from I do not know, as I have been all through their web site, and I cant find it. Anyway it worked, online for 1 hour 35 mins and then it cut me off again . So back to the e.mails again. I have also found that the password section when I try to get in to my account, has a mind of it's own. Sometimes it will let me in, but the majority of the time it says I have typed in the wrong details, which I have'nt. I am seriousley considering canceling my account and going elswhere. Don't happen to have any advice on a good service provider do you?. Merlin |

That's a load of Edit: self inflicted censorship! I have a modem/router (now) and there is nowhere to put a number in! When I had/used the Frog I used the Help number (08005427898). Anyway I beleive they are fobbing you off. Get tough with them, ask to speak to a Supervisor (get him off his tea break - again!) or say you want to speak to someone Senior (rank not age) as say that unless it's sorted soon (give a deadline if you feel extra brave) you will terminate and seek a FULL refund on the basis that it does not live up to their adverts etc (ala Trade Descriptions etc).
Good service provider? Ahum, I'm with Tiscali! I'm sure that you can get plenty of advice on that if you asked in the Broadband thread. As a thought, I started (years ago now!) with Virgin dial-up. They were ALWAYS good (still have/use our virgin email addresses) so, on that basis, I would expect their dsl to be good to.

Merlin, are you there?
Just saw this on Tiscali Forum that you should check setting for: 'disconnect if idle for.....'. Don't know whether that would help you or may may already have done that. Pisces |

Sorry for the delay in getting back ( My son installed a program on the computer which it did not like, had to re-boot the whole system) not a happy bunny
. I had checked my settings and they were ok, funny thing is Tiscali were trying to say that it was a prob with my computer, yet although I have not made any changes, the internet connection is now A -OK. The prob must have been their end, and my threats of cancelling my account made them look in to it. No apology yet though .Thanks for the advice anyway. Merlin

I've had similar problems with Tiscali regarding speed and email. Some of the time it's OK, but other times, more often than not lately, it's painfully slow, with long gaps between burst of data. Emails, even simple text ones, often need more than one attempt to send, ( I stopped NAV scanning outgoing because it was a pain to keep sending them again from the sent box), and if I send a big attachment, well, I just don't now. So I've had enough and have sent a cancellation email, even though I'm under the 12 month contract period. They broke the contract after all, not providing service as described. By the way, you may not know that you cannot cancel a credit card payment to them, they have to cancel it. So I suggest logging on to your account if you use a CC, change it to a DDM and then cancel that.

Quite a few people seem to be suffering exactly the same problems with Tiscali broadband as I am: slow or non-existant connections (bizarrely, it seems to work well before 11am ...contention methinks). I wish I'd read the forums before signing up.... A friend of mine signed up for 256k access and gets a really good 512k connection.....

Re: disconnecting
Do make sure that you have Microfilters on all extensions... sometimes people forget things like Sky TV boxes and the like, which can cause disconnections. Sean |

I've made certain that everything has a filter on it. I even tried putting the modem drivers on my P4 laptop and plugging it into our other phone socket (filter in place) it behaved in exactly the same way as my P4 box - failing to connect or connecting at painfully slow speeds...
I think it must be a contention ratio issue. The connection seems to work well before about 11am and then deteriorates until it fails to connect in the evening - but that's no use to me now that I'm back at work.. |

ah - the filter is for normal phones - the adsl connection must plug direct into the socket (i.e. no filter should be put on the adsl modem!),.
try the modem in the master socket - with just the adsl modem plugged into it,. unplug any other phones in the house (just while you try it!) ![]() Sil PS,. welcome to TS!

Even though the stuff I got only gave me the option of connecting my Sagem ADSL modem through the filter, I gave your suggestion a try. I unpluged every other phone in the house (no Sky) and used another modem lead to plug the Sagem into the socket directly - no filters. Exactly the same: failure to connect on 5 tries. Any other ideas will be gratefully accepted since I'm not getting any from Tiscali.

Hi coop,
Your story isn't that rare I think ![]() I think you have a good case for cancelling tiscali - and not have to stick in the 12 month contract (presuming you are within the 12 months),. a disconnection takes 7 working days (once tiscali put the order in) and a reconnection less than 10 working days from the new ISP.. some experiances relayed in <thread>:ADSL swap to another provider - tiscali ADSL cbuk issues condensed Whether you should try to swap ISPs is another issue perhaps,. it's possible that the problem is at your end (no you don't need a new mboard / cpu / memory!),. Perhaps start a thread in the BB forum http://www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/f6.html describe the problem and tell us the whole nasty story with tiscali! ![]() Sil PS,. welcome to TS!

I signed up for the Tiscali 150K/bit package and couldn't load a page for 2 weeks, the transfer speed was 1 - 2 Kbps.
I dialed-up and checked help pages, set up my system exactly as instructed and even phone the help line. In the end, I received an e-mail from a guy in the technical department saying that I had to change one on the settings for the Sagem F@st 800 monitor program - It worked, even the suipport staff in New Delhi didn't know this one!!! Here's what you do - Launch the diagnostics application of the modem using the "SAGEM F@st800-840/DSLMON" command in the "Start/Programs" menu of Windows. Press 'ALT'+'D' simultaneously to access to advanced configuration screens. In the CONFIG tab select "ISO" mode and click on OK to restart the modem. Reboot your PC, then connect tothe internet. It worked for me - Good Luck How do you get the Images next to your names?? |

Trouble is that Tiscali is the only ISP to do 150K service(?) I think.
Must say that as far as I'm concerned (I'm on 512K) I've not really had any 'internet' problems since I joined over 2.5 years ago - what problems there were, were billing and mine has been OK (unfortunately!) for 6 months now!

Yes, sign up then plug and play! Assuming that your telephone line/exchange is 'suitable'.

Hi Everyone!
I have just recently recieved tiscali broadband! It is a nightmare It is slower than what I had before! (Tiscali Anytime). Since we have had it, it has gradually got slower. We subscribed as we thought it was a good deal for just a pound extra than what we are already paying! When the phone rings we answer but you can't hear anything except a screeching noise!(While we are on the computer). At first we just thought it was something to do with it not being connected up properly but it couldn't have been that as the internet was working. Does anybody know what could be wrong?? |
