Default Modem instal. 'no dial tone'

I had a HD crash and after reinstalling windows 98 I have been trying to set up the internal modem card. It is a SpeedCom + VP156SP.

P&P finds it and the Conexant PCI modem enumerator and the Conexant HCF v90 56K speakerphone drivers are installed in control panel.

Each time I try to connect using windows dial up network, the card fails to get a dial tone. Yes, the line is plugged into the correct socket and yes, if I put a phone on the socket I get a dial tone in the ear piece. Also If I listen to the phone line while I do a 'connect' from the modem I can here it click in.

Anyone solved a problem like this.

I returned the unit to the shop that sold me the card as it is only a few weeks old and the guy was very obliging and tried my card in another computer - it worked. Then he tried another card in my computer and it didnt. He said it must be a motherboard fault and could do no more.

Seem to remember something similar when I needed to set up the Telephony settings in Control Panel. Sorry in advance if it is a red herring!

there is a setting in the modem settings for the wait for dial tone option as Silver Surfer said.

another thing that will cause a no dial tone error is bt's 1571 if you have a message on there

Thanks for the comments. No 1571's and if I get rid of the'wait for dial tone', it just hangs. Tried the card in another computer and it was OK and put it back in a different PCI slot and it still didn't work. Never mind, I have got an external modem to work on Com 1 now, so that will have to do!

Thnks again

I have 1571 enabled and never have this problem. People leave messages when I'm on the net and if I get chucked off later it reconnects just fine.

Also, have you made sure that its not the wire that connects the phone to the modem that's faulty and have your tried the card in another slot on the Mobo. Is the slot it's in damaged or got fluff dust and stuff like that in it?

I have tried another PCI slot. I used the same lead when I tried the card in my old backup PC and it works in that OK.
