Unhappy AOL Broadband & Netgear DG834G Wireless Router

Hello,

I hope you can offer some guidance with this one. I purchased the Netgear DG834G Wireless Router along with 2 PCI Network cards with the view to share my AOL Broadband connection between my two PC's wirelessly. I have updated the firmware and read up a bit about this but still cant seem to get the damn things working correctly. I have created a Screename for the router to log into via my AOL which has worked fine. The problem is i can only seem to get the wireless stuff working AD-HOC or from one computer to the other. This is no good really as i want to be able to turn each PC off/on independentley of eachother and still have access to the internet. I have sat for hours trying all the different settings MTU to 1400 and so on but no joy!

In my desperation i tried to use XP's built in Home Network Wizard which seems to have only made my problem worse, as now i can't even connect to the net via the Router as it says something about this IP already being in use. So first off, i would ask, how can i reverse what the Network Wizard has done? Then i would ask for any info you could give me on getting these PC's Networked wirelessley?

Both machines are running XP, i have the latest firmware for the router and like i say....i have had the wireless stuff working AD-HOC but not the propper way.

Im at the end of my tether to be honest so any help or guidance offered would be greatley welcomed!

Regards

Rizla

Heh,

I found the answer to my girlfriend's headaches........turns out the people who pack boxes for Ebuyer don't no their DG384's from their DG384G's. The latter of the two, being the one i ordered, the former being the one they decided to send! Take that one G away and it's not a "Wireless" router anymore. Bearing in mind that i ordered 2 Wireless PCI cards at the same time as the router, it's not exactly rocket science to understand im probably going to need a wireless router to compliment the cards

Now i have sometimes overheard my girlfriend talking about some sort of important "G-Spot", but never really believed her. However, turns out she was right all along, and if i'd have only listened i may have found it a lot sooner.

Anyways, i asked the nice people at Ebuyer to get this sorted out "Pronto". I sent the e-mail to them with my girl reading it over my shoulder so i sent it all like.....i knew about them all along..."Hey man, send me my G-spot now, i know u have it, don't think i don't know about them! My router is minus a G-spot......... the access point is fine.......don't worry about that.........just the G........i bet u got loads of them piled high in your whore-house (SP) and that's why there is such a shortage and lack of knowledge of them!!

They replied almost instantly and seemed very very embarrassed about the whole situation and offered to clean up the whole mess this has caused me and my girl, but i think they just had good customer care skills to be honest......and they could tell i was the type not to messed about!

But hey if we didn't make mistakes then we wouldn't be human

So im getting the one with the all important G on it soon, so it should (knock on wood) come together as i originally planned.

One thing i would like to clarify tho....is.....the Network Setup Wizard from XP....i tried it ......before i errupted into a red mist which only clears when you have seen something eletrical get smashed......and im thinking this is going to give me some trouble...so anybody know if/how i should reverse such settings, if i need to do something like this?

Regards

Rizla,

When you ran the setup wizard, did you say that you use the computer to connect to the net? If you are using a router the answer should be 'No'.

It is fairly easy to change back the settings on your Network adapter installed so that you can get it back talking to the router.

If you want the specifics please ask, but I think it is covered in some of the resources on this site.

Hello, I need your help. I have purchased and have managed to connect my Netgear DG834G Wireless Router to my pc using AOL. AOL works fine as does MSN messenger and AOL aim however when I try to access the internet using internet explorer, nothing seems to happen. When I revert to my orig internet connection explorer works fine. I have the same issue with my wireless pocket PC, works fine with msn but will not access the internet using explorer. I am new to wireless and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cool Re: AOL Broadband & Netgear DG834G Wireless Router

I had a similar problem bought the Linksys router on PC World recommendation, had great difficulty getting it set-up spending most of a day on call desks being told by Cisco / Linksys, AOL and Telewest that it wasn't their problem but making suggestions for one of the ohers. After chanign from 64 to 128 bit encrytpion we managed to get IE working and occassionally AOL would work but msot of the time it froze half way through the welcoome. A bit more frustration and I packed it up and took it back to PC Wrold where I was told that AOL was a constant problem but that the Netgear router usually worked - they changed the routers for me. IT WORKS perfectly 20 minutes set-up as it says on the box!

The last thing I was told was to phone back for an update and enquire about sending a BT engineer out. I do not believe it is my machine or my line. It could be a problem with the router or AOL. I do not want the hassle of having a BT engineer come out and possibly have to pay for his visit.
LCP is down
CHAP authentication failed
Those are the two problems within Netgear router configuration page. It can't seem to obtain an IP address from ISP, thus no internet connection is being established whatsoever.
If anyone has had the same or similar problems , or knows a fix , please reply!

Thanks

I noticed AOL have some sort of dodgy deal going on where the wireless menu is not visible in the modem setup page.

I typed in the URL from an exact modem from another ISP and lo and behold I got the wireless configured and switched on and the AOL service now beams out across the place.

HOpe it works for you.

hello - having the same problem with a second hand dg834g v2 that I bought off e-Bay - if I am not with AOL will i still be able to use this router for wireless - I have just started with Tiscali - again the same problem - there are no wireless options on the main set up menus but I do seem to be able to get at something by following the link in the thread above.

Thanks for any help or advice.
