Post Adsl Speed Tweaks

After looking at adsl guide and seeing may's top 10 list and how slow pipex is over 4000 tests done, i thought i would post my settings.

ADSL Speed Test

All settings have been done using Dr TCP if you want to reset settings back to default just leave all fields blank and click save.

You must restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Im using ipcop 1.4b4 router / firewall with a usb speedtouch modem. Some routers you might need to change your mtu on the router (if you can?) if its lower than the setting you put in Dr TCP

Make sure you select the right network card from the drop down box if you have more than one also if using usb you put the setting in the dial up mtu box.

This is the result from a fresh install of windows using all default settings.

Downstream 458 Kbps (57.3 KB/sec) 494 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 244 Kbps (30.5 KB/sec) 263 Kbps (inc. overheads)

This is the result after using BT's setting

Downstream 471 Kbps (58.9 KB/sec) 508 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 244 Kbps (30.5 KB/sec) 263 Kbps (inc. overheads)

This is the result after using faster settings

Downstream 480 Kbps (60.0 KB/sec) 518 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 256 Kbps (32.0 KB/sec) 276 Kbps (inc. overheads)

3kb/sec increase all adds up on a big download and to think i used to get 3 - 5 k on dial up

If you do a test at DSL Reports you will see packets sent are 106 some settings are only 100 or 103

Have a play you might get a little bit more out of your connection it might be worth doing the ie tweak as well Slo's ie tweak guide to speed up page loading

This is just quick basic stuff do a search if you want more in depth settings or how to work your own out.

These settings work for me on pipex they may work on other isps fine just a case of trying.

Post ADSL MTU Tweak

Or if you are unsure of how to do the above adsl mtu tweaks you could download BT's MTU tool, this will set it to bts settings.

MTU ADJUSTMENT TOOL

Just scroll down to MTU Adjustment Tool and you can download the zip file a text file is in the zip file on how to use it.

Default adsl mtu speed tweaks

Nice little increase Outsider did you do the internet explorer browser one as well.

If you not happy with editing the reg to put the 2 lines in i can do a reg.ini and it will put those two lines in for you

Speedgiude's TCP Optimizer has been updated 15/4/05 seeing as Drtcp seems to have problems updating with xp sp2.

Same type of program but with a few extra bits

Might be worth trying the 1478 mtu if its not better nothing lost nothing gained.

Dont forget to restart for it to take effect.

Dont really watch streaming videos but some clips i have looked at seem to work ok.

Test just now

Downstream 1919 Kbps (239.9 KB/sec) 2072 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 254 Kbps (31.8 KB/sec) 274 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Downstream 1875 Kbps (234.4 KB/sec) 2025 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

with these settings :

These settings seem to give me the best results

Downstream 1879 Kbps (234.9 KB/sec) 2029 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 243 Kbps (30.4 KB/sec) 262 Kbps (inc. overheads)

The 2 didnít seem to make much difference .. thank you for the tweaks .. my speed is better since I changed them with the TCP Optimizer .. just thought you might have some advanced settings I didnít see ..
