ManHunt. game withdrawn by stores

A number of high street retailers have taken the violent computer game Manhunt off their shelves.

The move comes after the parents of a schoolboy murdered by a friend blamed the game for their son's death.

Warren Leblanc, 17, of Braunstone Frith, Leicester, on Wednesday pleaded guilty to the murder of 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah in February 2004.

Stefan's parent's claimed Leblanc had been obsessed by the game but standards bodies have rejected the link.

Patrick Pakeerah, Stefan's father, welcomed the decision to withdraw the game from sale.

He said: "It's a video instruction on how to murder somebody, it just shows how you kill people and what weapons you use.

"If we can stop another family having to go through what we're going through now, by taking this games and games of this nature off the shelves, then we would have achieved something and Stefan wouldn't have died in vain."

Leblanc had savagely beaten his victim with a claw hammer and stabbed him repeatedly after luring him to a local park.

Leicester Crown Court heard the defendant had planned to rob Stefan.

However, Stefan's mother, Giselle, claimed Leblanc had been obsessed by the game, which awards points for savage killings.

"When one looks at what Warren did to Stephan and looks at the brutality and viciousness of the game one can see links," she said

She said teenagers, who lack the psychological maturity of adults, play the games, even though they are aimed at over-18s.

And she said she was "ecstatic" about Dixon's decision to stop selling the game.

A spokeswoman for Dixons said on Thursday: "We are taking it off the shelves with immediate effect."

In addition to the Dixons Group Plc, which includes PC World and Currys, video game specialist Game announced that it had taken Manhunt off its shelves as a mark of respect.

Other stores including WH Smith are debating whether to stop selling the game.


A statement from the game's publishers Rockstar North said: "We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by these tragic events.

"Rockstar Games is a leading publisher of interactive entertainment geared towards mature audiences and markets its games responsibly, targeting advertising and marketing only to adult consumers ages 18 and older.

"Rockstar Games submits every game for certification to the BBFC - British Board of Film Certification and clearly marks the game with the BBFC-approved rating."

A spokesperson for the British Board of Film Classification said the game had been given an 18 certificate.

It was also the board's opinion that there were no issues of harm attached to the game and there was no evidence directly linking the playing of games with violent behaviour.

The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers' Association, the voluntary standards body for the video game industry, said: "We sympathise enormously with the family and parents of Stefan Pakeerah.

"However, we reject any suggestion or association between the tragic events and the sale of the video game Manhunt."

Professor Mark Griffiths of Nottingham Trent University, a psychology expert, said more research was needed into how violent video games can influence the behaviour of adolescents.

He said: "Research has shown those aged eight years or below do in the short-term re-enact or copy what they see on the screen.

"But there's been no longitudinal research following adolescents over a longer period, looking at how gaming violence might affect their behaviour."

I know this news item is a few days old. I tried to post it the other day, but it seemed someone had broken the scream and I wasn't able to post it.
I first heard about this on TalkSport. When I looked at the review for this game, I was horrifed to see, just how much this may influence someone to kill in the manner the game portrays.
This isn't the first killing where the game has been mentioned as an influence for a murder.
The games an 18+ certificate, yet this 17 year old boy was allowed to play it.
Are some games becoming way to graphic now? Or would these people have killed anyway, regardless of playing the game? If the game was a trigger to cause them to kill, would it be best not to have games like this being sold?
Is it neccessary to have all the blood and gore?
Games are not a far cry, from zapping little aliens descending on you, or a yellow ball called pac-man eating monsters!
As you know I'm not adverse to playing games, but I do draw a line at some of the games I wiil actually buy.
I told my boys not to bother asking for this game, because they wouldn't get it. Yet they told me some of their friends have the game already. Bought for them by their parents
I feel computer illiterate mums and dads need to know what's going on. On the games consoles and the computers of their children. Would they buy these games if they knew of the content, or do a lot of them not care??
Time parents took responsiblity, cause if they don't, then the government will. Then a lot of things we enjoy, like games maybe just not be availiable legitimately in the future.

Reminds me of when Mike Read banned "Relax" from the radio, look what happened there. Now everyone needs to find out what the fuss is about.

I don't think the game caused him to kill people. He's a living breathing person who know's right from wrong (?) and he made a decision to do it.

hi there! personaly i play grand theft auto vice city and im not out to steel anyones car or run them over,so for someone to blame a game or music (in the past) i think is a bit daft or narrow minded!
ok some young lad has lost his life to which i am sorry, but do we go blaming religion and banning it every time a suicide bomber kills'dozens of people?? no we dont!! so let people make up there own mindes to what they can or cannot buy,the certifacates(Cert18etc) are there for a reason just follow them.

Well after going to bed (felt tired)
I Turned on the radio flicking through then i came onto TalkSport (Don't laugh it's interesting) And This is what they were talking about Video Games!

Basicaly the parents blamed the videos games of why this kid went out in the street and hitting someone with a hammer!
(he should know right from wrong at 16, even tho he had been in trouble with the police before)

It was pretty funny actualy speaking of how the likes of Jack The Ripper etc What Video Games Did They Play?

And saying that they must start to ban violent films.

And that they must ban "The Bill" Because it teaches kids to talk the police badly.


These were just some of the things mentiond.

I texted in and he read it out, - it was only something stupid about GTA cause they didn't know what it was.

EDIT: Dont know if this has been mentiond but they are blaming thep parents because They Let Their Kids Play The Games.

And are also blaming the shops which sold them.
Also Dixons apparently have taken all the violent games off its shelf (not sure if it's just man hunt or others)
