The user ID field refers to your modem or router login details. Rather than using your normal Tiscali username and password, temporarily substitute these with a username of speedtest@speedtest_domain and a blank password field. More on this here.

OK the BT Speedtest reports a speed of 1019 kbps at 8pm today. I'll test it again later.

So what actually does this mean; how is it related to my very slow download speed?

If the BT test shows a marked improvement over tests carried out while connected via your ISP then the fault lies squarely with the ISP.
If the BT test shows no great deviation from tests carried out while connected via your ISP then this indicates exchange congestion, line instability or problems with your equipment.
If the former is true then your ISP should accept these results as evidence of a fault and act accordingly.

1019 is a poor result though still within BTs limits (400K!). Try SamKnows or one of the other exchange checkers for info on your exchange.
Remember that this applies to speed tests in general, not just to P2P downloads!

My line was eventually sorted and I was getting 1.8-1.9 speed test results most of the time. As already mentioned this will not improve your torrent speed as the traffic shaping is doing that outside your control but if you are sticking with Tiscali at least get what you are paying for.

P.S I was told by Tiscali support (the ones that ring you to troubleshoot your line) that unless the BT test came under 800K they weren't interested and would do nothing about it i.e. would not raise a line problem with BT.

David, the reason being, it has to do with BT saying that anything from 400kbps is acceptable for a 2Mb line, which Tiscali do not see as acceptable, but it is always worth raising it in the Broadband Support forum as the Mks would not see that as acceptable. There can be several reasons for slow speeds, especially if it is continuous, and this does have to be looked into.

hey everyone first post here but i have been looking around for a while to find a cause for my slow bittorrent speed and i have come to rest that it is probably tiscali throttling my speed. i have "unlimited" 2Mb connection and its normally really fast but with my BT client (Bit Lord) i only ever get up to 30KB. just wondering if there is anything i can do to my router to help boost it a bit, or is it my client???
thanks

Change your client to one that supports encryption and turn it on. Change the default port.
I use Azureus on port 443 with encryption always on:

I'm not with Tiscali but my provider, Pipex, throttles P2P to around 25K. If you click on the attached pic above you'll see that my download speeds for a healthy torrent on a 2M connex are well over the 200K mark.
I know some Tiscali users who are experiencing similar speeds under similar conditions.

Sorry if this is mentioned previously but how do you fully encrypt the bittorrents. Im using azureus also. Iv switched it on to use rc4 encryption but unsure what else I have to check. I will be switching ports when im home. Also if you are on a adslmax line how do you set your upload/download speeds if they are constantly changing? download (2300kbps) and uload (340kbps) Im on a busy exchange I am thinking. Eclipse have done lots and even had BT round but nothing. Nothing will be done either because im getting more than the minimum.

First you need to get your speeds. To get this take your download and upload speeds and devide them by 8 then multiply them by 0.8 . (so your dload will be 179 and uload 22) This will allow you enough bandwidth to browse the net at a good speed while downloading.
Next go into the options and set a port. Which hopefully has no NAT errors(You shouldn’t have any if your not using a router). Seemingly port 443 is good on tiscalli.
In the connection settings enter the speeds we calculated into the download and upload speed sections.

You should be good to go. If its still not good. Adjust them slightly to see if it helps. Sorry I have no pictures to explain.

Also check this link I found.

does anyone know of any torrent sites that are "invite only" or hard to get on that i could possibly get an invite for? i have heard many people saying that these sites are alot quicker due to the limited amount of people using them (more available bandwidth) and i dont know anybody personally that could invite me to one?? i am a very good user and always give back what i download and then some............ please let me know if you have any ideas?? thanks!

pisexy.org is a limited user site. It took me a while to sign up but was very fast. It was hard too seed stuff because of the limited users. Remember though that it wont be any faster if the ISP is throttling ports.
