Dudes dont give up i had the same problem, i just kept harrassing and ringing them constantly complaining, threatening to issue writs. The breakthrough came when i asked for my mac code and went to onetel for my telephone bills. They suddenly released the restriction, and i get a 2 meg line now instead of a one meg line that i pay for

I have the same problem. They dumped me on the heavy users list a while ago, which I wouldn't care about except that my ability to use bittorrent is clearly being hampered the whole day and not just during peak times (only time the speeds are decent is during the very early hours of the morning). I emailed them about a dozen times over the course of a month, and when I finally got a reply it was just some guy in India (I thought we only had to deal with them over the phone!) who told me why I was put on the heavy users list and how I was on shared bandwidth during peak hours, which I wasn't asking about. He then repeated the standard lie "your bandwidth will not be affected outside peak times".

I've sent a reply stating that I've tested it plenty of times during the day and the most common limit for me is 20kb/s downstream, only on Bittorrent (normal web browsing and downloading from sites is not restricted) so my bandwidth clearly is being restricted outside peak times, but I don't expect to hear back from them anytime this month. I haven't found any way to get around their "traffic shaping". Torrent encryption just doesn't work, and changing ports does nothing either.

the only thing that i don't get is if you set your router to forward the port 433 or whatever you choose, is that gonna make problems for other users on the network ie. if they are trying to browse a SSL site because the router will be forwarding the packets to your pc?

The previous poster is clearly en employee of tiscali. bullsh1t. I have been on the internet for years, know all there is to know about opening the right ports, choosing the right clients etc, and tiscali has the slowest speeds by miles of any provider i've had- on or off peak.

absolutely bloody awful company. i used to have a 750k ntl line and it was 5 or 6 times quicker than my 2meg tiscali line at best, and at worst about 25 times quicker.

I Recently joined with Tiscali and I have to say they are possibly the worst providers in the UK. I dont even understand why companies would block Bit Torrent, its legal, I used to use it to transfer legal files from one place to another. With a private Torrent site I am with the best I get is about 150kb/s and thats on a good day, average i get peak and off-peak is 30kb/s and i'm on their 8mb unlimited service.....AVOID TISCALI AT ALL COSTS!!!

Note, I only get average speeds since using this site: http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-encry...rrent-traffic/ It may help you.

To all having trouble using torrent software!!
I use utorrent which allows you to set up a specific port and test it via a port checker website. But most important in preferences under bittorrent you can and should un tick enable dht network and untick enable dht for new torrents. Finally you need to setup protocol encryption, set to forced. Oh nearly forgot you can also setup peer block list(IP Block List) available on any torrent site. These above settings within utorrent wil hide the fact that the packets of data to and from your computer are torrent based. Good eh!
Try it anyway got nothing to lose, I use it never had any problems, however like anything torrent based software need to keep up to speed as ISPs change how they check for torrent users all the time. Torrent forums are a good dource of info.

I'm in the same boat. I changed from a 2 meg BT connections to an 8 meg Tiscali one. Or should I say 512Kb, because that's what it feels like.

I've emailed them a few times so far, each time they say it's a problem with the line, the issue is being "escalated". They're favourite word, it appears over 10 times in the responses that I got..

I also hit them with this..

"If the situation isn't rectified within the 28 days as stated in 17.2.3 of your terms and conditions, I'll have every right to terminate the service without being charged for the remaining time on the contract. What I have just now is basically a falsely advertised 512Kb connection."

All I got was this..

"It is very disappointing that we were not able to resolve the issue at the earliest; however, please do believe, that this is not the kind of customer service that we provide. Your experience with us is a very rare case and we believe in customer satisfaction only.

I hope that you will consider this error as just an aberration and give us another chance to serve you better.

I checked our database and found that this case has already been escalated. You will soon receive an update regarding the issue."

It's only been 6 days so far, so I'll give them the 28 days to fix it, or I will be cancelling. They can sing for their money too, if they want to persue it. I entered into a contract of lies and deceipt. What you see on paper is nothing like the service they provide. If there's any loophole in the terms and conditions that covers them in this case, I'll be telling them where they can shove it.

As you can tell, I'm a little frustrated and ********ed off with them just now..

I hope someone else has other experiences with them that they can share. I'll post an update, whatever happens..

oh sometimes i could cry, this is one of them!>>>

tiscali has been fine for months, never could get torrents to run, finally did!
was all chuffed xD

but the speeds were crap, thought it was my setup, and tried everything, then read up on this. I wanted to dl "Allo Allo", its 8GB. Thought that will be OK, so left it for the night. Started off with speeds of 30K but thought it was on limit time so expected speeds to pick up during the night. Woke up about 3 with the noise of PC and checked to see how it was. Only 30KB! :o.. had 50 seeders and like 300 peers.

Not impressed. Had the port 443 on for a few days, limewire went like a wee sweety! .. torrents 175KB+..

Now its stopped..
think they've capped me again

Limewire and torrents run like sh*t...
cant reach speeds over 10KB!

Any ideas guys? emailed them and never got a reply.. writing another as we speak!

Think we can start a petition? xD

Hippo..

The scanner is free and called scanport DUH!

Hi. im new here.

I have just recovered from tiscalis classic once a month cuttoffs. Spent the whole day yesterday trying to connect to the internet. before it happened i had an average torrent speed. mainly in the 40s and 50. At best it would reach 100-130.

but now i am stuck on 0. that includes both downloads and uploads. i get connected to seeds and peers but nothing comes in or out. Its the first time i have had this happen and i dont know what to do.

Theres nothing wrong on my side because i have not changed any of the settings. it is all tiscalis doing.

I have searched the net and found quite alot of similar problems regarding tiscali and bittorent clients recently.

Oh im also on the 8 meg service which told me i would be receiving a 4.5 meg service. but this has beed the same as the 2 meg service i get. It seems that all theyve done is change the name 2 meg service.

I am livid!!!!

Karta, I am in EXACTLY the same position as you - I'm fiddling around with all my settings now trying to fix it when I suspect it's Tiscali.

How can I get out of the contract? They advertise at "up to" 8meg broadband but I've never got over 3.5meg, which I understand is probably accounted for in their T&C's but still, now my entire internet speed is atrocious as well as torrents.

What's going on?

well, here i am today. Internet seems to be normal. Now i only have 1 torrent doing around 60, the rest are 0 again.

I think ive had enough with tiscali and i may end my contract. My 12 month period normally end on the 25th of Jan. So considering they take 30 days to cancel, they shouldnt taker any EXTRA MONEY.

Hi, ive been with Tiscali for about 3 years now but recently ive been having some weird problems with certain traffic, namely torrents, games etc

This started about 3 weeks ago, i noticed everyday since then between the hours of 5-7pm and 10-12pm all traffic for these connections seems to be simply cut off, all torrent traffic stops.

Any single game i try to connect to just wont happen along with any similar programs, limewire etc. Though during these times regular browsing and http downloading is the same as usual.

As soon as it comes to 10-12 at night traffic seems to go back to normal. I contacted tiscali a few times about this telling them the exact hours this happens everyday and they keep telling me my connection isnt limited in any way.

edit: generally anything other than http browsing (ftp, encrypted protocols, certain ports) is completely blocked off during those hours.

Hi, not in speed terms. there are 8 bits in 1 byte so.

1 MBps = 8 Mbps
1 Megabyte per second = 8 Megabits per second

a bit is a 1 or a 0
there are 8 bits in a Byte.

Therefor a 8Mb/s (8 Mega bits per second) ADSL line can Transfer 1MB/s (1Mega Byte per second).

However this isn't entirely accurate, as some is lost due to protocol etc etc

I too have been having slow speeds with Tiscali for 3 weeks on bit torrents. I've tried the 443 port which didn't help much. Tried all technical things I can. BT tested line which is fine. I've been in IT for years so know its nothing my end.

I have phoned Tiscali several times.

Their support is pathetic. They have trouble understanding technical terms.

I am switching to another broadband supplier.

Any recommendations for those that don't throttle bittorrent if you have an unlimited connection?

Thanks,

Lee.

The man on the line said something went wrong with the system (Whatever) and I should get the MAC code by this Friday. If I dont, then how can I make a formal complaint?

I was watching WatchDog last night and I think it wont be too long till Tiscali appear on it eh?

BTW its strange cos in peak hours like just now, my Azerues refuses to download even popular torrents like the film Godfather which has over 1000 seeds or something. Then magically at 2am or something I can download well over 200kb per sec. Stupid capping. And it wasnt mentioned in my contract, Tiscali have quite a cheek!

If you use P2P at peak times, and download large files, you will end up getting FUP'ed. Off peak is when you should download large files and use P2P, as P2P take up large amount of the bandwidth., it is a bandwidth hogger.

This has been there for at least a year now, which you can read in their terms and conditions on the Tiscali website.

Many ISPs now have FUPs, and if they do not, they may in the future, as has been known to happen.

that is because they are LIMITTING you and everybody else who are unfortunate to be using them, and that includes OUT OF PEAK TIMES their FPU aint worth the paper its written on, its b**locks, the same as they spout to you , lies after lies to keep you with them so they can EXRACT as much hard earned from you as possible and for as long as possible AS THEIR OBJECTIVE uis to give you as little as possible My advise is to cancel piscali and find a isp who dont do that sh*t and there is still some left forget the £4.49 £9.49 offers its b*llsh*it to get you to sign up. if a butcher offered you a sirloin steak that weighed 12 0z for £1.99 would it be good meat? if you want bb service to download torrents ect then you must pay for that otherwise you will be disapointed as for torrents and other p2p its dependent on how much the seeds in torrents are providing to the tracker as to what sort of speed you can d/load them at , the more in the more you get out before you take isp's and distance in to account so there is no unique solution to d/load torrents ect but swithing from piscali may help you READ THE FORUM

I have just (foolishly) joined tiscali and was actually surprised to get problems.
This is because my brother used to be with homechoice and has never had a problem. He can be playin an online game with 3 or 4 torrents running at top speeds. Of course now, homechoice and tiscali are one in the same and he still has absolutely no problems. But with myself, torrents have never gone above 0kbps! I havnt tried changing the port to 443 yet, so will do tonight. Also can you recommend me a torrent program? i have tried 'bittorrnt' and 'bitlord'. Strangely, when i was still living with my parents, I had the same problem on talktalk, yet my next door neighbour is on talktalk and has no problems.
very wierd

u torrent is about the best to use as for your freinds claim of being able to play online games whilst d/loading torrents at full bandwith impossible as he would end up with a ping time so high no game would sync so i think somone is telling u porkies as for d/loading your torrents u be best doing this in the wee small hours of the mornings and forget weekends
