Smile Ad-aware 6.0 released

What is ad-aware?

Ad-aware is a small and easy to use program that will scan your system for known advertising systems, and lets you remove them safley from your system.

During the process Ad-aware scans your memory, registry and file system for known modules. If a related module is found in memory, it means the spyware was active until Ad-aware detected and unloaded the particular module. (e.g. If TSADBOT.EXE is found in your memory, it means that Timesink is not only installed, but also active.)

Nearly all of your internet related and general system settings are stored in the registry. Ad-aware will scan parts of your registry for modifications or values and references to known spyware.

Finaly your harddrive(s) will be scanned for known spyware files.
After the scanning process, you can view a list of all spyware references residing on your system, and select removal.
In short terms: Ad-aware helps you to get rid of spyware.
Importantly it's free to use :D

You now can export detected registry keys as a registry-bookmarkfile for further analysis with Reghance.Includes an updated referencefile, covering Transponder detection and removal.

Am trying to download that refupdate.exe via Download Accelerator as we speak at a dismal 1.1KB /Sec :fume:

I have also spent nearly 8 hours in total trying to download a music program (AcidXpress) at an apalling 1.3 KB/Sec :(

What the hell is the point eh ? :(

WinMx won't even work for me unless I turn off ZoneAlarm completely and then that crawls along....

Morpheus didn't even connect to any servers so that was soon uninstalled.

Know of any progs. that delete old, unused dll files and *.ini files please ?

Really need to clean up this PC of mine.

(I use Ad-Aware 5.6 and RegCleaner but it still crawls along).

Oh yeah, that "AcidXpress".exe file is 26.73MB, and has said 23 Mins, 50 secs remaining for bloody ages now, even if I cancel the download, disconnect then try again when I have re-dialled up.

Sheesh :(

Anyone know how to "get rid" of them annoying adverts at the top of Download Accelerator Plus ? (well, that's what it says at the top of the "file downloading" screen, I thought I had d/l'ed just Download Accelerator v5 ?!?!).

Not everything is as cracked up as they're meant to be.... Maybe I went and d/l'ed someones bloody virus thinking it was a.... ahem !

Eww Download accelerator.
That's got to be THE biggest phone home programe there is.

that thing tells it's maker every about you :(

what you download, where you download it from, what your ip address is, what your email address is (if you use outlook as your email program it's already sent the correct info about you) what os you run what screen res you run.
and it does this every time you download.
And since it's part of the program even using a firewall will not protect you since you need to give the program access to download :|

Only reason I discoved this was when I was checking my @guard logs and I noticed DAP was sending out personal info about me (and I mean my real name and email address).

Two programs you need to avoid are Download accelarator and GO!Zilla both are heavyily involved with big spyware companys :\

Seem to be suffering attacks from persistant pop-ups. One had the impertinence to change my home page and put itself in my bookmarks as a favourite.

Seems to have got past Zone-Alarm and anti-virus systems ..will Ad-aware kill this type of anti-social activity or do I need something else?

What's in this for Ad-aware? Will try and find out from a visit to Lavasoft.

adaware removes 'nasties' like aureate comet cursor gator etc :)

5.62 is now out - it came out the day after I posted this thread (so you might have 5.62 already) the way to tell is to look at the top left of the window when you run adaware, it will either say 5.6 or 5.62 - 5.62 is latest, but I can't see much difference (and couldn't find any notes on the site).

Sil,
I downloaded Ad-aware.

Never used it before. Very impressed.

I downloaded it mainly as I've been getting dubious email for awhile now...including some Korean *ahem* spam mail....nice ladies but not the sort of email I'd want my kids to see!

I wondered how the hell they got my email address......Then when I read about Ad-ware and Spyware I thought hmmmmm.
So i deleted everything it told me too.

However it stopped Kazza working. So I had to re-install that. I think it had something to do with Webhancer. What is webhancer?

Any Idea where these inscrutable oriental peeps got my email? I hold up my hand and swear I HAVN't been to any of *those* sites HONEST! (well not for a lonng time - that novelty wore off after I'd been on the net for about a month.

ahh webhancer - v nasty bit-o-spyware :lol

some apps check that the spyware is still installed, before they will run, other apps just install it an dont panic when you uninstall the adware :)

try morpheous - its the same as kazza (same network etc) but as far as I know it doesn't need adware :)

more on filesharing apps etc p2p - another one

as for email addr, it depends, some email systems - like hotmail or perhaps yahoo, get spam because the spammers simply guess usernames.

If you used you email address for anything online or put it into apps that have spyware then this is a likely route to get added to the spammers lists - use fake (or temporary) email addr wherever possible :)

Was about to post about 5.7 and then saw this lengthy thread.

Thought I had downloaded and installed something I had already..until I reached this last message and found Silv had updated the thread title! :lol :D

This upgrade working nicely in the background. No problems to report.
