News! Black Google

I thought I was seeing things at http://www.google.com but ..

http://www.google.com/intl/en/earthhour/

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

reminded me of a link Ian had the other day http://www.blackle.com

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

There is some truth and logic about saving energy by displaying black backgrounds on web pages, or any application you are using, but only if you are using a CRT display.

If you are using a CRT monitor, it will use less power on black web pages. To display white, the red, blue and green guns must be fed maximum voltage. To display black, all three guns must have virtually no voltage. Due to the inherent high voltage/high current system that a CRT uses, there can be a considerable saving of energy when diplaying on a black background.

LCD monitors work in a completely different way, so a white screen will use no more power than a black screen.
