Just tried again and it updated OK so maybe AVG have fixed the problem.

One thing I have noticed though is that every time an AVG update fails, it promptly updates the date and the time to the exact minute against "Last Update" in the statistics . A user who has not seen the popup conveying "The connection with update server has failed" will think that AVG has updated it's Virus definitions without realising that it was actually trying to convey the date & time of Last "Failed" Update.

I know ther is an icon in the task bar which should indicate the status but it can easily be missed.

You should be ok now. This problem was a few weeks ago.

I am just getting used to the AVG8 (free) that I downloaded a few days ago. Everytime I go on the computer there is an exclamation mark over the little AVG thing at the bottom of the screen.

It says I need an update, so I do that, then it says I have to restart, so I do that but when I restart there is still and exclamation mark there.

It seems there are loads of updates per day, is that right or have I got the settings wrong.

The exclamation mark probably just indicates that one (or more) of AVG's services isn't running.

I've been running AVG for several years and have known times where this is a common problem with AVG updates. I don't believe it is a firewall issue as I have sat there doing manual updates at various times and it DOES eventually update without the need to change any settings. Sometimes it might take a dozen tries or I might have to leave it for a later time but it WILL eventually update.

IMHO it is because of load on the servers caused by sheer volume of AVG Free users. Because it is a free service, AVG themselves likely give it a low priority to paid users.

Thanks for that explanation. I have been trying to update the same update for the last few days. It says its done it, tells me to restart but the same update is still there waiting for me to do it again with the exclamation mark.
