AOL Changing Lines to Virgin Fibre Optic-Utorrent

First of all I heard this news and whatever and thought why not.

As it moved everything was going well, i had faster surfing speeds etc

Only one thing i really need advice or tips is on my Utorrent speeds

The speeds after moving to Virgin went shooting up to 470kb-500kb per second.
Then out the blue moon it slows down to 110kb and its like it can't go faster than that. After turning off the computer and whatever the speed at around 11.00pm were back to normal but the next day(today) at 4.00pm the speeds were back to normal as at around 6 it went pair shaped. Anyone know why and how ??

Oh yeah and also yesterday i ran a speed check at around 7pm and my speed on average downloading was 100kb, i checked today at 12.35pm and its 380kb.

Sounds like they are traffic shaping during peak hours.

It means that the ISP shapes or manages the traffic. In effect they limit the bandwidth available, either for all traffic or for different types of traffic (usually p2p).

Your ISP does not have the bandwidth to give everyone full rate at all times. It would be very expensive if the did so they have to manage what is available or everything (web) slows down for everyone.

Oh right, so basiclly there's nothing I can actually do anything about it then ?.
Ohwell it was a free upgrade not like its doing them a favour lol :P

what sort of speeds did you originally get before the change? 100kb/s seems a little slow even for browsing,i would not be happy with that at all the traffic shaping is only supposed to affect the peer 2 peer (u torrent, lime wire some gaming connections) not all traffic,sounds like their taking the ^^^^ to me is a bit like when tiscali regraded my connection from 2.2mb to 8mb, i used to get most of the 2.2mb all the time then the 8mb max lucky if i got 3mb less than that at weekends, (now with a good isp 7.6mb 24/7 no complaints,btw) the only people to benefit from these upgrades regrades are the isp's themselves and not their customers

My original speed was 2mb. I defintally got the moast out of that. My Download speeds on Utorrent was 230-240kb per sec and my internet was going as it should as. Know it's like as soon they start traffic shaping whatever its called my
Internet Downloads only go like 30-40kb and my Utorrent slows down to 110kb. Mind you before traffic Shaping its 500kb on Utorrent.

yeh, certainly following the path of tiscali,throttled well and truly, it maybe worth wile considering switching isp's there are still a few around who dont throttle you, or at least not to such an extent,without knowing what sort of speeds your line could support ect it would be difficult to recommend which isp,plus it would depend on what you wanted to do, ie download using u torrent frequently,ect,if you live say within 2.5km from your local exchange, and your line stats are reasonably good then you should find that you can get somwhere near the 8mb,so then you look for low contention, llu freephone support ect, theres a few out there o2,be,ukonline(uncapped) or theres zen,seriously internet and others but most have a monthly usage cap,then you have your average isp orange, tiscali, aol, bt ect who advertise broadband as unlimited, but throttle during peak times as these seem to be the most attractive offers they easily become over subscribed,use ip data stream ect in the case of aol using virgins cable network then they are not buying enough bandwidth from them,or it's virgin doing the throttling,in my opinion unless you use bb for buisness use, if isp's dont want you d/loading then as a domestic customer there is no point in even having a connection, and if you did, then a 2mb would be ok but the price would have to be significantly cheaper

Yeh Your right, i actually paid quite a bit more than we should have done because of me being a DSL member and AOL only take BT right something like that anyway. Like I said at the end of the day they doing us a favour and it does cost them for our bandwith. Mind you there is always a catch to these "special" offers lol. And in Augast they should be upgrading it 10mb !! c how that goes ini lolz.
