Default The Scream's Definitive Open Source Software thread

I thought seeing as many of us like/use open source software that we should have a thread dedicated to it, and add to it as we find more.

There are some most of us already know about but there are some people that don't know there is an opensource (free) alternative to hand.

Office and Desktop Publishing, Graphics Editing

OpenOffice, compatible with MS Office and Works Documents, much better than MS Office, more simpler interface and mch less bloatware

The Gimp, Powerful photo editing software

Paint.Net Another powerful photo editiong package

More to be added as and when I find them.

Good idea Behemoth
Fellow Open Office and Gimp user here

also take a look at these open source media/video players that have coped with anything I've thrown at them :

Video Lan Client aka vlc
Mplayer

Both of these have many advanced features like http/telnet control. Streaming to other PC's and file conversion.

I thought this thread may go down well

One for the DJ's among us

Mixxx - Want to try mixing music ? Don't want to spend lots of money on expensive software ? Then give Mixxx ago, compatible with many USB DJ Consoles too

Anyone want to do a spot of virtualising and don't fancy paying the silly price for VM Ware ? (running an alternative operating system without formatting and ruining your existing configuration)

VirtualBox - Does exactly what it says on the tin

CDex - Rip your music CD's and convert them into mp3's to go on your mp3 player

DosBox - Got an old game you can't play, then this may just do the job One of my favorite freeware apps

Not exactly software, but very handy all the same. Just done a new install of your chosen Windows flavour ? Don't want to manually download it all again ? Give this site a try, works really well
