A few months ago when I had problems with the computer the engineer turned off my automatic downloads of Windows updates.
I thought today I better check to see if there are any updates that I should download. When I went to the Windows update page it says I need to download some new software to be able to download their updates. Have any of you done this? Was there any problems with this new software? I want to make sure before doing anything hastily. Many thanks.

Microsoft do update the update software occasionally - can't remember the last time, but if you're not getting your updates via a third party (i.e. you're going directly to MS) there shouldn't be a problem.

Well, i had to do a clean install of xp/os yesterday, there was only one thing that i canceled wga tray notification, as i don't like spyware on my pc,even though it has a MS stamp on it, but all i think the new software/tool does is check what updates you already have plus other ms products that you have installed, didn't cause any probs, well not yet anyways

Have just downloaded 31 updates and have now set for automatic updates. The only one I didn't download was IE8. I have IE6 and am quite happy with that. Will I eventually have to download IE8?
Thanks for all the advice.

Well if your preference is for IE then I would suggest you move to IE8 sooner rather than later. However, have you tried Firefox or Google Chrome? I use both (mainly Firefox) and have found them to be better and many regard them as safer too, but that is a matter of opinion!
See what others have to say too.

Hiya.
I believe they can be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs. In A/RP, there is a check box at the top for Show updates, tick that box if not already ticked and look for the update number, then uninstall it as you do a normal program.

System Restore to a point before you updated, then select the updates you want to install.
