Cool Adaware Updates

update 30th June 2004, the list should now be working again, sorry for the long outage!

Ad-Aware 'spyware/adware' scanner (thread) is a great free product. Like most scanning / anti-virus software it needs 'DAT' file updates. A DAT file contains information that allows the software to 'recognise' things like new virus's or new advert serving software.

The email notifcation system for Ad-Aware is now back online, it will send a short email when there's a new DAT file for Ad-Aware (typically every few weeks). If you would find this useful you can subscribe to the list using the TS! mojo mailer (Just select 'adaware-update-announce' to subscribe to the Ad-Aware list in the first drop-down box).

Un-subscribing is easy, each email contains a link to remove yourself from the list, once un-subscribed we have no record of your email address. We don't (and won't) ever give email address's to 3rd parties, our privacy policy is linked from the bottom of this forum and the email notifications :)

Ad-Aware 6.0 Personal (i.e. the free one) is out now.

Just tried it and found no spyware on my computer (but then I'm reasonably careful about what I install).

Edit It is possible your older version of Ad-Aware may not have been deleted by the installation upgrade. You may have to do this manually (like what I did!) to prevent the older version opening instead of the upgrade

Thanks for the advice Silv.... I've now subscribed to your update service for Ad-Aware - the instructions on how to do this are in your earlier post.

Interesting thing. Zone Alarm, quite correctly, delayed implementing the upgrade until I had read one of the warning notices on the Zone Alarm websiste. The reason was that I had upgraded Ad-Aware and it was the first time the new version had accessed the internet. Zone Alarm wanted to be sure that it was a genuine upgrade and not a corrupted program trying to access the internet.

Well done Zone Alarm! (another "Scream" recommendation!)

edited first post,. I think the adaware updates thing will be hard to fix and so you won't get any update emails,. will try an send it to the aawupdate email also,

Sil

PS,. I have pretty much ditched aa for <thread>:Adaware? Read this link (SpybotSD - Spybot - Spybot S&D Search & Destroy) as on the whole it seems more through,. I actually have both installed (well they are both free!) but generally use spybot more often :)

I use spybot search and destroy. I never find any spyware though as I also use spywareblaster which places killbits in the registry that stop any spyware installing in the first place :)

Hi all !! ...........

I now run both Ad-Aware, and Spybot. Much as Sil and nemmie do.

I do like the way that Spybot works, and I also thought that Spybot was more thorough, as I have been running them both for about a week now, side by side, to see if there were any major differences.

Tonight, I ran Spybot first. It did its thing, and discovered 4 bits of spyware lurking on my system, which it duly removed, at the end of the scan, after being given permition to do so. Then I ran Ad-Aware, immediatly after it. And Lo and Behold, Ad-Aware found another 7 items, that Spybot obviously missed. ( And before you ask, NO !! they were not the ones in Sypbots cache, that it tells you about, when it knows that you also have Ad-aware installed ).

It also seems that with the new v6.181 from Ad-Aware, it is increadibly faster than v6.162 ( previous version ), and also signifficantly faster than Spybot.

Anyone else found anything like this between the two systems ??.

Regards ............

John

Hello everyone!
Can somebody tell me why, after I have installed Ad-Aware 6, scanned the whole system and removed all the items it found, I still got loads of ads popping up in my computer! I left Kazza run in the morning and when I came back at night I found more than 10 pop-ups!!! Is there anything I haven't done in Ad-Aware, or is it because of Kazza?
Thanks....

Thumbs down Adaware is not

A Pop-up Killer it simply removes spyware from your registry and in programs. It is only as good as the last adaware update and the limitation of the program/loaded data

Default Adaware Plus

There is an add on called "Ad-Watch" that I believe deals with the pop ups but I don't think that feature is in the free version.

I have found that sometimes it is necessary to switch "Ad-Watch" off to gain access to some sites.

With "Ad-Watch" on there are a few aggressive sites that seem to penetrate the system but usually they can be got rid of by Alt-Control-Delete and then closing. The worse that happens then is that Explorer is closed

Are other pop up programs watertight are do they let some aggro pop ups through?

Hi Bluetonic !! ..........

Kazza is renowned for hosting spyware inside its program. I wouldnt allow any version of it anywhere near my system.

I now have reverted to only running AdAware, and have ditched Spybot. AdAware seems to be much better and is certainlyso much quicker. Just make sure that you check for new new updates frequently.

I have never found a situation yet that has conflicted with AdAware. It has to be said that AdAware does not do a 100% removal of spyware, but it does good for me. I usually also do a regular Cookie search, usually after an AdAware scan and then manually delete any "iffy" Cookies that I find. Many of them will actually tell you that they are "add-Cookies".

Regards .........

John
