However told you that?
Yes Microsoft DO send out email's - have you never subscribed to any? What they don't do is to send email's with attachments/updates etc.
What you don't see on the email's above is the digital signature which I have deleted together with personal details.

Very reassuring indeedie ..

Worldwide computer giant Microsoft has issued special thanks to the Aberdeen teenager who discovered a major software glitch.

Matt Thompson was only 18 when he found a security fault in several of Microsoft's Windows software packages.

Matt, of Danestone, then contacted the 32 billion-a-year company in America to alert them to the problem.

They then worked together in secret to come up with a solution.

The former Oldmachar Academy pupil was working with Aberdeen IT when he made the discovery in October. He found a "vulnerability" which could have allowed hackers or viruses into PCs all over the world.

And now a special thanks has come from the massive corporation.

A spokeswoman said: "Microsoft would like to thank Matt Thompson for working with us to help protect customers by reporting the vulnerability."

The firm said, while its security response centre works constantly to identify any problems, it needs people like Matt to help.

She added: "Microsoft wants to single professionals out for special thanks."

Default Stampede for patches disrupts Microsoft update site

The crush of millions of Windows users trying to patch their computers overwhelmed Microsoft's update service for several hours after new security fixes were made available, the software giant acknowledged on Wednesday.

Immediately after Tuesday's release of four patches that fixed a score of flaws in the company's operating system, traffic to Microsoft's Windows Update site spiked higher than seen during any previous update, reaching a sustained download rate of more then 50GB per second. Past patches have resulted in 2 million people visiting Microsoft's Windows Update site every hour to download fixes. This time, between 3 million and 4 million users came to the site.

@ 50GB/sec,. or is it 50Gbit second - either way is a lot

Because the W32.Sasser.worm, parra 2, is spreading (see this thread) coupled with the fact that many have NOT installed the fix (for various reasons!).
