try something like http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ - it has several disk apps, including various diagnostic disk apps as well as disk checking and disk partitioning _ cleaning apps

it's possible the disk is messed up, you could try formatting / checking it in another PC, might just be easier to put everything onto the 40gig drive or see how that goes perhaps?

hey thanks for the reply.

i had come across Hiren's Boot CD which i believe is simillar?
any way tried a few hdd testing tools, and all seems well
with the 120gb hhd.

was thinking tht it might be the bios it self or maybe the boards on its way out?

who knows eh?

nick.

could be a bios setting,. if it's a sata drive then to install XP you need either to set bios to see the drive as an IDE or have the sata drivers load as part of the XP install (I don't think that it's needed for win7 but I don't know)

Hiren's is similar I think, either way if you have a boot disk you can check the disk from the PC without worrying about the OS, that should give you confidence that the PC / disk looks ok before trying the install routine

might not be disk issue at all,. if it's crashing during install it could be all kinds of things,. perhaps flakey memory (ultimate boot cd has some ram checkers on it as well)

thanks for the help m8.
changed the mobo, which has seemed to have helped.
at least it hasn't crashed and the bios has seemed to have displayed the hdd
for what it is..
