I'm sure most of you are already aware of this, but just in case, a reminder: Microsoft won't call you out of the blue to tell you there's a problem with your computer.
I had someone call yesterday who claimed to be from Microsoft (from his accent I'm guessing somewhere on the Indian subcontinent) who claimed he was seeing problems from my IP address. I, basically, fobbed him off by saying that there were no problems and that I knew what I was doing (a couple of times) and he hung up. Kind of wish I'd strung him along a bit now to find out exactly what he would have got me to download (an inevitability from what I've subsequently read on the net), but I was in the middle of a game (UT3) at the time and couldn't be bothered.

yep, it can be quite convincing if you aren't expecting it, a simple question like do you know what operating system is on my computer they can't answer

Yes, that's been doing the rounds for quite a few weeks now. I had it about three weeks ago and they said that my ISP had told them - however they did not correctly guess my ISP - and that they could actually see that my computer was having problems then. Bloody marvellous I said. You can tell that without me even switching my computer on!
After a pause he then went on and babbled about something I know not since I left the phone off the hook while I progrmmed his number (strangely it was NOT witheld!) from the other phone. I told him to bu...r off and I put the phone down. ![]()

it should surely be an illegal act to phone someone and pretend to work for another company in an effort to get someone to buy something by tricking them?
