Default How do I make my router SECURE?

Hi all,

Just discovered this forum I have a Netgear DG834G v2 Wirless Router. It is connected to 2 PC's via a cable - we have no need for the wireless feature. A while back, our neighbours came over and said they could access our PC's desktop, because our router wasn't secure!!!

You can imagine how embarrassing that could possibly get... so our neighbour played with some settings, and said it was now secure. My question is pretty dumb... I've unscrewed the arial from the router - does that stop any possibility of anybody else hacking into my connection (whether by accident or not)?

I have since managed to change the security from "Disable" to typing in a password in "WEP Key" that gave 4 numerical keys. For some reason I had to try this several times before it seemed to take effect. Does this mean we are now secure?

My apologies for any dumb questions, this sort of thing is pretty much out of my league If anyone has any advice, it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Best way if you dont need wireless is to turn it off.

Under the wireless settings there is an option to enable or disable the wireless access point. Just untick it and click save

If you do use wireless in future, it's a good idea to change the SSID to something that doesn't immediately identify your router brand and change the login details from the default "admin" and "password" to something more unguessable.
Also, use WPA-PSK encryption and choose a strong alphanumeric key.
